XP Install will not recognize hard drive
    « on: July 19, 2008, 05:53:39 PM »
So, I just connected my brand new hard drive (Western Digital Caviar SE, 80 GB) to my motherboard (Soyo Dragon2 KT880, a few years old), and I'm trying to install Windows XP. Windows Setup says I don't have a hard drive installed. As what I know about hardware could fit into a thimble, I'm at a loss for what to do. Everything is set up correctly as far as I can tell. I've tried replacing the cables, resetting the CMOS, and pleading tearily with my system, but nothing has worked yet.

Some back info:  I installed a new power supply as my old one was insufficient. Everything was going fine, but after the install I started getting a message that said "Insert boot media or select boot device". I thought that maybe during the install I'd killed my old hard drive (there was a funny spark when I first powered it up), so I got the aforementioned new hard drive and copy of XP, only to have this come up. I'm wondering if it was even the hard drive in the first place, now

Can someone help? What do you need to know? ???

    Thank you VERY much!

    Jen

(there was a funny spark when I first powered it up),

Where was the spark? Does the motherboard look damaged?

Is the hdd detected in the BIOS?

EDIT: Do you have both the data cable and the power cable connected?
If you don't have time to do it right
...when will you have time to do it over?

The spark was actually from one of the cables. I'm not sure which. There is no visible damage to the motherboard, and I'm still getting the Soyo Dragon thingie (technical term, lol) when I boot up.

The hard drive is NOT being detected when I start up, and when I go into the BIOS I don't see it.

Yes, both the data cable and the power cable are connected. ^_^

        Thanks!

Try using a new power lead.

            Same thing.

I have also tried connecting only the hard drive and not my CD or DVD drives.

If you can, try drive in another computer and see if it works. If not, return it. Or, try another drive in your system.
