DVD player skipping for a few seconds
    « on: July 20, 2008, 07:50:29 AM »
    Hi,

I'm having trouble with the dvd player on my laptop. It's a Gateway Mx6627, with windows xp home ed, 1G RAM, and with an intel Pentium processor 1.73 Ghz,
If I put a movie on my computer then it works no problems at all. But when I put a DVD in the DVD rom the sound and video skip every few seconds,
I've tried different players, cleaning the lens and various codecs but nothing seems to work.
I've even tried switching the primary IDE channel to "DMA if available" and still no luck.
I'm also in South Korea right now so and trying to play DVD's I bought here so I'm not sure if that's part of the problem or not,

If anyone has any ideas of how to fix this please let me know,

    Thank you!

    What Operating System?

    Try this:

    Perform a Disk Defragmentation
(Start --> All Programs --> Accessories --> System Tools)

Go to Start --> Run and type msconfig and press Enter.
Go to the Startup tab and uncheck as many programs as you can.
(note - you can still use the program, even if it's unchecked)

Restart the computer and see what happens.

I'm not sure but aren't there different DVD video formats for different countries?
If you don't have time to do it right
...when will you have time to do it over?

I assume, when movie is on HD, not on DVD.
      Then...

If you're talking about "region" settings, that may be an issue here. DVDs are probably from Region 3 (S. Korea), but we don't know what region id DVD player set to.

NOTE: When changing regions in DVD player properties, keep in mind, it can be changed only FIVE times, and that's it. You're stuck.

That exlains a few things for my English Teacher......I wonder why this is...

The reason why I suggested what I suggested is beacuse there could be a background process taking up a lot of processing power, thus making the video jumpy.
However, it could be a codec problem.

Yep, that's what I had in mind.

Well, there is a good chance, we won't find out, since OP is MiA.

I'm doing a disk defrag now thx for that idea I didn't think of that,
As for the DVD region setup I check for it and my dvd player is set to North America, so I decided to try a dvd I brought from Canada (where I bought the laptop) and the prob is still there,
Thank you everybody for your help, if anyone has any other ideas please let me know

If DVD player was made in US/Canada, that means it's set to Region 1.
At the same time, if you bought DVDs in S. Korea, DVD player would have to be set to Region 3.

Also, did you try to reduce your Startup Items? (like Itunes or Quicktime don't need to start up with Windows)

yes I've already reduced my startup items
I", just confused because a month or so ago it wasn't a problem, it's only started skipping recently, so I've done virus and spyware scans various times,

Do other discs do the same?
Does this disc work properly on other computers/players?

It only skips when I try to play DVD's,
Cd's work fine and the dvd's work fine on my portable dvd player also bought in canada,
I'm starting to think that the dvd player it self has the problem...

Try reinstalling the drivers. You can get them from the manufacturers website (or by going on google and typing [cd drive model] driver.
