Microsoft Websites Have Become A No Go :(
    « on: July 20, 2008, 09:39:04 AM »
Ok. Recently I've had a wireless router installed. Its connected to my main PC in my study. And then i also have another computer in my room which is connected to it. Connection to the internet is fine.
On my main PC in the study i use Firefox. On the PC in my room i use Internet Explorer.

My problem is that since I've had this wireless router i haven't been able to use MSN, or any microsoft related websites (msn.com/hotmail.com) or myspace. And there are other now inaccessible sites.

Ive checked the host files and theres nothing wrong with them. Ive uninstaled and reloaded both firefox and internet explorer on the two computers. And I'm still at a lose.

Anyone out there that's got any suggestion at all. I'm willing to try anything. Almost.

Try downloading CCleaner and delete all temporary internet files and cookies.

    Does this help?

Could it be your firewall if you have one installed?

Try going to the command prompt (run > "cmd"/"command") and type "ping microsoft.com" (without qoutes).
Try a few of the websites that dont work, by changing "microsoft.com" to the website name. You should get a reply from the websites. (It should say "reply from".....)

      Good luck.  ;)

Heres what it said from me trying that ^^

        Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
        <C> Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

        C:\Documents and Settings\pc>ping microsoft.com

Pinging microsoft.com [207.46.232.182] with 32 bytes of data:

        Request timed out.
        Request timed out.
        Request timed out.
        Request timed out.

        Ping statistics for 207.46.232.182:
              Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 <100% loss>,

        C:\Documents and Settings\pc>

So i tryed it again with another site that im not able to get on.

        C:\Documents and Settings\pc>ping myspace.com

Pinging myspace.com [216.178.38.116] with 32 bytes of data:

        Reply from 216.178.38.116: bytes=32 time=167ms TTL=245
        Reply from 216.178.38.116: bytes=32 time=174ms TTL=245
        Reply from 216.178.38.116: bytes=32 time=166ms TTL=245
        Reply from 216.178.38.116: bytes=32 time=170ms TTL=245

        Ping statistics for 216.178.38.116:
              Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 <0% loss>,
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
              Minimum = 166ms, Maximum = 174ms, Average = 169ms

        C:\Documents and Settings\pc>

I dnt really understand that but i thing it means myspace should be fine and theres something wrong with microsoft.
So i tryed myspace.com and im still unable to access it.

Ive had alook at the Windows Firewall and everything seems alright to me.

Aah... Im not sure what it could be. It could be a virus/spyware.

A few weeks ago I couldnt open some websites either, so I used Spybot Search & Destroy. It found a trojan that was blocking access to some websites in Firefox and IE. It basically changed the settings completely.

Try not to worry though, but I would recommend you downloading Spybot S&D through the link above and checking for any malware. But be patient as it can take about an hour to finish the scan.

If it finds any problems, I think you should just select "fix selected problems".

If you are in any doubt, post a new topic in the Computer Viruses and Spyware Board.

Good luck and I hope it works out.  ;)

Just to add other members comments......

Open IE, go to Tools / Internet Options / Advance and scroll down the list and remove the check mark off of "Show friendly HTTP error message", exit and relaunch IE and go to Microsoft.com , and post the error message here.

Another piece of info, lots of web servers deny ping request and Microsoft.com is one of there so don't rely on ping request results.

          Cheers

But, it happens in Firefox as well, so its not IE.

It seems that the network doesnt support or cant connect to secure (https://...../) sites.
In Firefox go to: tools > options > advanced (tab) > encryption (tab). Make sure both checkboxes are ticked under the protocal heading.

Now try going to "https://www.microsoft.com/" (without quotes and dont forget the "s").

Could a "blocked website" list have been created somehow?
