    disk space low- tried troubleshooting...
    « on: July 22, 2008, 02:17:16 PM »
    I recently installed itunes and music but put it all on my D drive on my laptop.  However, since then, my C drive is saying its out of space.  I cannot uninstall programs with Add/ Remove programs b/c it says I don't have enough space... (obviously...that's why I'm trying to delete...)  I tried all of the suggestions found on this site (system restore options, hibernate, defrag, compress, etc) and I freed up a tiny bit but still won't allow me to delete programs.

    The thing is, when looking through the installed programs, anything that uses a lot of space is in the D drive, so I am not sure how I am out of space.  Can I have a virus?

    What can I do?

    All right, first thing I want you to do is go to My Computer and Right Click C Drive and go to Properties.
    Tell us the Free Space, Space Used and Capacity.

    Then do the same thing with D Drive

    Also, what Operating System is this?

      C drive:  59.3 GB used, 2.20 free

      D drive: 23.2 used, 51.3 free

      It's Microsoft XP.

      Again, all of my larger programs like Adobe video editing software is on the D drive, but still, bc it seems to be the largest thing on the comp, tried to uninstall and it wouldn't...

      Can you confirm that all your music is on D Drive.

      Also, Download and install CCleaner
      Once installed, make sure you check the following boxes:
      Internet Explorer --> Temporary Files
      Mozilla Firefox (if you have it) --> Internet Cache
      System --> Temporary Files

      That will clean your computer of unnecessary files.

      I also suggest you move all your media like pictures, music and videos to D drive if you can.

      Is that 2.2 GB?

        it did read 2.2 GB.  I fixed the problem.  It seems I had my Adobe software on both the C and D drive...when I deleted it from C, it freed up half of the disk space.  I also lost my itunes and all my music disappeared but I can transfer that again now that I have space.

        thank you all for your responses.  Glad I got this solved...now back to working on my network issue

        All righty then. You should make sure you have at least 15% disk space free on C drive for better performance.  ;)

          for reference... when you import music into itunes even if it is on another drive, it will put a copy on he drive that it is installed on.

          Wait a sec, I thought, iTunes stores list of files (libraries) only, not files themselves...

            There is an option to have iTunes manage your library and keep all of the music in one folder, but maybe he meant the files are still there and he / iTunes can't find them now. :P
