If you havent tried finding out what drive it is at this point I would.
Windows 7 RC Tester.  Working on it.  Your monitor says etchasketch on the side!

If I fall who is there to pick me up now.  I stand alone but I stand as the gaurdian for whom I wish to protect.  The sound of my blade utters my name as you fall.  For I shall not move.  For those that forsake the very people are wosres

So you get to the 3rd screen right?

No, it never makes it to the third screen.  The screen it freezes on is not on that website, but if it were it would be between screen 2 and 3.

HERE is the microsoft help page for this problem, which so far has not helped me.

I found out it was a Hitachi HDD and I have (to my knowledge) cleaned it out. This has not solved my problem, unless I am missing something here.  I used a Hitachi boot CD thing from their manufacturer (Drive Fitness Tool), and the "erase disk" feature did not work because it said I had a "Non HGST" hard drive ( dont know what that means). So I used Darik's Boot & Nuke to erase it all, but the original problem is still there.

Out of interest have you tried putting win98 back on it?
Remember you would have to format with a boot disk first.
The windows help page you found seems to address the problem so you should work through that as much as you can including the link to specifying other HALs.

Can you help me out on the same thing? I have a gateway and i did the system restore last night and the restore seemed to go through fine. Then it restarted and it goes into loading windows xp back on it. When the status bar gets to about halfway, it freezes up on me.
