how to install xp from usb data stick
    « on: August 05, 2008, 03:01:23 PM »
Right this might seem like an easy answer to some people here however im having muchos difficulties, my problem is i recently got an elonex webbook for myself which runs linux (ubuntu) and as much as i hear great things about it i hate the OS so i was wanting to change it to windows xp however i do not have a cd rom drive on the webbook nor access to an external one, heres a list of what i have.

    1. 1 x elonex webbook 80 gig hard drive 512 mb ram (linux)

    2. 1 x 4gb usb data stick

    3. 1 x windows xp service pack 3 CD.

Is there anyway of transferring everything off the cd onto the stick and booting from the stick (which is an option on webbook). i tried copying everything onto it and doing it that way but no luck is there anything i need to do, can anyone direct me to a tutorial, i keep getting very hard to do explanations involving floppy drives which i dont have either btw.

    Any answers are much appreciated,

    cheers

Well, first of all, we can't instruct you on installing XP in this manner because it is considered illegal and we don't help with such things.

Also, the CD you have won't put XP on your laptop, as it is only a Service Pack.  You have to already have XP installed in order to use SP3.  Unless this is an XP CD bundled with SP3, but I'm not aware of these existing yet.  I could be wrong, though.

I would suggest getting a CD-ROM drive for your laptop (you should be able to find one for $20).  Or if you think that will be too complicated, you can get an external CD-ROM drive that you can connect to your laptop via USB.  I don't know why you don't have CD-ROM, but it's a very important component.  And, of course, you are going to need an actual Windows XP CD and not just the SP3 update.
