    Nancy Drew computer games
    « on: August 08, 2008, 09:54:28 AM »
My daughter plays the Nancy Drew computer games but they started making new games. Once they did that the minimum system requirements changed and now none of the new games install on my computer. These are the requirements:

1 GHz or greater Pentium or equivalent class CPU,
    128 MB of RAM,
1 GB or more of hard drive space,
32 MB DirectX 9.0 compatible video card,
16 bit DirectX compatible sound card,
24X CD-ROM drive, mouse, and speakers

My computer has Intel(R)Celeron(TM)CPU, 1300 MHz, 1.29 GHz, 256 MB of RAM.
    I have DirectX 9.0c.
I don't know if I have 24X CD-ROM drive, mouse, and speakers or if I have 1GB or more of hard drive space.
I would really appreciate if anyone can help me out with this problem. Oh and here are the old system requirments for the computer game :

166 MHz or greater Pentium or equivalent class CPU,
    16 MB of RAM,
150MB or more of hard drive space,
16-Bit DirectX 7.0 compatible graphics video card,
16-Bit DirectX 7.0 compatible sound card,
8X CD-ROM drive, mouse, and speakers

    Thank you.

    What game is it?

Also, what flavor of Windows are you running?

The Last Train to Blue Moon Canyon and Legend of the Crystal Skull

and I have Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 2.

What model is your computer?  It should say somewhere on the front or the side, most likely on a sticker.  For example, mine is a Gateway GM5094E.  If you can tell us the model of your computer, it will help us determine what your system specs should be.

When you try to install the games, do you get any error messages?

Certainly not a powerful machine, but it should be able to handle these games.  Like Carbon asked, do you get any error messages?  What exactly happens when you attempt to install the games?  How much space do you have left on your hard drive?

Nothing happens when I try to install it. I have tried different ways to get it to start but it won't. I've tried clicking run and then typing in e:\setup.exe, I've tried going on to my computer and clicking on the CD drive then clicking on the install folder but again nothing happens, and I've tried other methods. I know I have a fair amount of hard drive space because I replaced the hard drive 2 years ago. I think the computer games might not be working because I have a max 8x CD drive.

Are you sure your CD-ROM only has a max speed of 8X?  According to the specs online, the Presario should have a max around 40X.

It may be a longshot, but perhaps you should check out this link and post the three requested logs...

Sorry I got the CD drive confused with the CD-RW. I'm checking the hard drive space [just to make sure I have space] and...I have 19.7 GB of free space so I have enough space for the games. The game The Last Train to Blue Moon Canyon used to work on my computer but during 2006 I had to get my hard drive replaced [like I said earlier]. Everytime I turned my computer on it would start but before it came to the account login screen it would go black and have some kind of an error message then it would restart by itself and do it all over again. So I went to Best Buy and brought my computer to Geek Squad. They told me they couldn't do anything about it and that my computer was basically useless. I had a friend who fixed computers so I brought my computer to him for help. Thats when he told me I had to replace my hard drive. After I got a new hard drive I had to reinstall the new Nancy Drew games but for some reason they didn't work. Thats when I started to have this problem with the new games.

The computer had the same problem in August 07 but I didn't have to get a new hard drive.

            Maybe this information will help.

To be perfectly honest, I'm not getting too many ideas here.  You can go ahead and try my previous suggestion...

You're welcome and I'm sorry I haven't been able to help more.  Unless you're interesting in checking out that link for the malware removal...

Also, I'm wondering something...if you go to C:\Program Files, do you see the folders for these newer Nancy Drew games?  I managed to find a link to download a Nancy Drew game from BigFish Games.  When I tried to install it, nothing happened.  But awhile later, I realized that it had installed itself silently and when I checked C:\Program Files, there was a Nancy Drew folder and it contained all of the necessary files to play the game.  Perhaps this is the case for you as well; it may have been installed this whole time without you ever knowing it.  You should look into it and if this is indeed true, you can create a shortcut to the game and put it on your desktop (or wherever you please).
