    SLOW PC
    « on: August 10, 2008, 11:19:12 AM »
    Hello to all.
I came to realize that over time a PC becomes slow just simply by installing/uninstalling software.
I have read the Q&A section in regards to that matter on this website but a definite solution does not seem to be in hand.
Is there any way to get my PC to run faster WITHOUT the use of those third party softwares?
How can I get rid of those old registry files of softwares I uninstalled?
I have 3rd party registry cleaners but its all a hoax since if I go to re-download an old software (trials are a great example) the software seems to IDENTIFY my computer and it acts like it was always installed even though I uninstalled it AND I cleaned up the registry after that with MORE than one software.
I think if I am able to get the registry cleaned up my computer (any computer) will become faster again.

    Am I right?
    How can I do that?
Thanks in advance for your answers.

      More info, please: http://www.computerhope.com/forum/index.php/topic,33586.0.html.

There is probably more to it than "get the registry cleaned up my computer (any computer) will become faster again."

If you don't have time to do it right
...when will you have time to do it over?

...and DO NOT fall for any 3rd party "miracle tools". They DO NOT work.

        Define "LOOOOONG".
When Windows is up, does computer operates normally?

I would assume 2-3 (sometimes 4) minutes  for boot time is awfully long.
          PC operated normally but slow.
Even after loading windows and everything looks ok if I right click on the empty desktop or any file I get the busy pointer for about another minute (actuall 60 seconds time) just on a right click on an empty desktop.
Now I wouldn's know maybe what LOOOONG is but I happen to have two more PC's an Old Laptop and an OLD desktop all loading in times between 20-30 seconds.
So 3 minutes is long considering this machine is by far better in specs than anything else I have here.

          Yeah. That's not normal.

          Download HijackThis:

          Click on Download HijackThis Installer

Did you create custom "hosts" file with all those winmx entries?
I didn't even know, that people are still using WinMX....

                I don't remember any more.
WinMX has been here for ever and I don't even use it any more.
Did you see anything else which could be creating sluggishness to my PC?
Also what do I do with Hijack This?
I never used this program and I don't know what to do with the items I see after scanning.
                Thanks.

                That's why I asked.
If you don't use it, uninstall.
                When done...

Download HostsXpert (http://www.majorgeeks.com/Hoster_d4626.html) and then follow the steps below:

                    * Unzip HostsXpert.zip
                    * It will create a folder named HostsXpert in whatever folder you extract it to.
                    * Run HostsXpert.exe by double clicking on it.
                    * click the Make Writeable? button.
                    * click Restore Microsoft's Hosts File and then click OK.
                    * Click the X to exit the program

                Post new HJT log.

Also, was the computer slow before you installed AVG 8.0?

Well the PC became slower by time.
My suspicion in regards to registry has to do with the fact that the other two PC machines here are quite faster in booting although they load a whole bunch of stuff on startup. I haven't modify any of these.
Still though because I use them only occasionally and I do most of my work with my main desktop and I tend to install/uninstall many prg's thats why I suspect that the sluggishness is due to registry clutter over time.
Since we are on this topic I have this question:
when installing a prg like trials etc when we trying to uninstall they do leave "stuff" behind. That's why I guess we cannot re-install an expired trial.
Is there a way to get completely rid of a prog ?

                    The log is clean.
You didn't answer my question, if your computer was also slow before installing AVG 8.0.

                    Then...
Download, and install CCleaner: http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds. Get "Slim" version.
Read CCleaner instruction here: http://www.jahewi.nl/ccleaner/ccleaner.html, and run CCleaner.

                      I have Ccleaner for years.
I perform cleaning at least once a week.
In a way I kinda answer the question.
PC became slow over a period of time. AVG might have contributed but I didn't see any dramatic change because of AVG.

                        BTW
                        I forgot to mention:
Pulling up the ADD/REMOVE programs window takes about 1-2 entire minutes up until it builds the prg list.
                        Thought I'd mention that.

I would have to do that to check it out but I am currently running some prg's.

Let me know, when you can.
It may bring some hints, since in Normal Mode, I can't see any unnecessary startups, or services running.

                              OK
I restarted in SAFE MODE straight no networking.
Took a while loading again but after booting
it was significantly faster in simple things like right clicking on the desktop, pulling up START menu as well as ALL PROGRAMS menu.
When I re-restarted in normal mode (current) I saw some improvement but still
if this PC is down and I'm out the door and want to come back really quick to check for an address in google maps or something I WILL NOT consider gettin this PC on if u understand what I mean.
To resume: FAST (or normal) in safe mode
SLOW (but not as much) back in normal mode.
                              Any suggestions?
                              Thanks again.

Now I will also like to mention the following.
Although I don't have virtualy anything in startup I do have a HUGE list of prg's in QUICK START plus a small toolbar with my drives (self made) on the task bar.
                                Is that a possible problem?

I'd like you to totally uninstall AVG, and install one of these:
                                - Avira free antivirus: http://www.free-av.com/en/download/index.html
                                - Avast! free antivirus: http://filehippo.com/download_avast_antivirus/
This is as an experiment. If things won't improve, and you like AVG better, you can always go back.

Number of icons on your desktop, and number of Quick Launch items may have influence on startup time, but not afterwards.

Well, in that case, I'd back up all data, and go for fresh install.

I appreciate your help and suggestions.
You've been with me almost all day.
I was (and still am) considering Format C: but I have to find a solution of my 120G worth of files to backup.
If it wasn't for that I would have been done by now and all this discussion would have been avoided.
Just trying to work around formating.

Thanks and BTW It does work a bit faster admittedly.

Just a suggestion - add a new hard drive, install Windows on it and use your current drive as a data/program drive. If speed is your thing, get a WD Raptor for the boot drive - I boot well under a minute with AMD x2 4800+ and 2 GB of RAM with a 36 GB Raptor boot drive.

                                        Best of luck!

I might be new in the forum but I am not so new in computers.
I am not PC guru or anything but I do run PC for Audio, Video and website production.
I have many and heavy prg's installed on this baby here.

Sometimes, there is nothing wrong with the machine, but all those little bits, and pieces add up to slow things down. It's almost impossible to track all of them down, and....here we go, reinstall may be the quickest and best option.

Thanks for the suggestion about the hard drive.
                                            I do have a nice Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD2500KS 250GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA
but I might still consider your suggestion just to skip the hastle of backing up 120G
                                            Thanks.

A re-install will help, for sure, and for your use another GB of RAM would probably help you...and don't forget the Raptor!

The smallest I saw is 74G and goes up to $180

                                                    Are you in the U.S.?

                                                    http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010150014+50001306+1035507821&name=10000+RPM

Still expensive - but that 36 GB is all you need to run the OS and the few programs that won't install to your other drive. I originally bought two of the 36 GB to run in a RAID 0 - wasn't significantly faster than the single drive so I broke the RAID and re-installed onto just one drive. I've been running it about two years now and only have about 11 GB on it.
