    Windows Vista blue screening problem
    « on: August 17, 2008, 07:09:07 AM »
    Hello

I have recently had my computer blue screen three times in under a day and am at a loss  for what is wrong. In each case the only constant was that I was running Internet Explorer v7 - in two cases of that I did have a lot of tabs open, but have never encountered this problem before. I have emptied my temp doc folder for the internet thinking this could be a memory problem, alas the bluescreen vanishes before I can get any details it lists written down.
attached is my dxdiag - any help would be greatly appreciated - Thank you

Does this happen when you don't have IE7 open?

IE7 has been running each time, though in the timespan since this started it has never been off - will keep running today with it off and see if anything happens

      Ok.

Can you remember what the Blue Screens said? (at least the top part)

Also, what Operating System are you using?
What did you do before the problem? (downloads, installs, ect...)

windows vista = pre service pack
I don't recall downloading or installing anything pre the serivice pack. The only major things I have are adding photos from my camera which does eat up the memory fast - down to 27GB in C last night when the first 2 crashes hit so I copied over 10GB to the other drive partition - so now around 37GB free - surly vista doth not need more than that free to run?

Windows requires at least 15% of free space to run properly.

What about the BSOD (Blue Screen Of Death)? Can you recall it?

Besides Carbon's unanswered questions....what is your hard drive size? How much RAM?

I am afraid I cannot remember any of the bluescreen details - if it occurs again I will try to get the top line memorised

Full harddrive is 500GB in size split into two partitions
          C - 149 GB (38.6GB free)
          D - 315 GB (111GB free)

as for the windows - I know the beta went out and I thought also that now the first service pack of vista had been released?
and no repeat of bluescreen so far today

Just bluescreened (IE7 running at time) and the top line reports that windows is nolonger working
            the second line reports:

            DRIVER_IRQL not equal or

the rest I cannot remember (sorry).
            I hope this helps

sorry - not being clear am I - I am running vista ultimate as is - that is without any of the service pack one upgrades - I am aware the beta went out a while ago and I think the full version is now released - I have neither.

              OK. It's clear, now.
Did the error occur again, while using IE?
As for the error, two main possibilities - overheating, or bad RAM.
              Let's start with temps.
Get SpeedFan: http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php, and post computer temps, while idle.

Error did occur again with IE7 - I have now shifted to using opera

                temperatures whilst idle:

                system 37C
                CPU      37C
                AUX      127C
                HD0      32C
                Core 0  44C
                Core 1  46C

if it is an overheating problem would dust inside the case also be a possible cause (or contributing factor)?

Keep us posted, if it happens again with Opera.
                This is desktop, correct?
                Post processor type, and model.
44-46C, while idle is on a warmer side. I don't like it too much.
Yeah, turn it off, get a can of compressed air, and give it a nice cleaning inside.
While opened, turn it on, and see if all fans are running.

Your processor max temp is listed as 61.4° C, so I think, I was right, when I didn't like those mid 40s while idle.
BTW, what is the room temp around your place? Is it hot weather?

no idea about the room temp = but at the moment is is not that hot round here - it can get very hot during a sunny day, but no weather like that for at least a week if not more (posting from UK - Suffolk area - that lump on the east side ;))

OK. So let's say, room temp is about average.
My dual core AMD (which is usually little bit hotter, than Intel) with several programs running, and an average room temperature, is listed at 23C, right now.
Start with cleaning inside, and we'll see from there.

Dedusted - though not as much as I would like, I lack a really good point to get into all the tiny gaps - will try to get hold of one. It was also far more dusty in there than I have had before - either its this computer or the fact that my room is far more stuffed with stuff leading to a larger ambiant dust buildup. Ran the computer with the side off and all fans are turning.

                      temps whilst idle:

                      system   34C
                      CPU        29C
                      AUX        127C
                      HD0        30C
                      Core 0    36C
                      core 1     39C

Some reduction so I think dust is certainly a contributing factor - though with still high temps.

                      Temps went down little bit.
Now, try to run IE again, and see what happens.
                      No error with Opera?

no error with opera - though it is erractic - heat buildup though could be the cause as the computer will run fine for a good while (hours) and then hit a patch of blue screens.
Running IE7 now - will see what happens

If the error occurs again, turn computer off, get a house fan, point it toward open case.
Turn computer on, and try IE again.

appoligies for not comming back sooner to reply (lost the link to this place!)
In the end I think this problem is somehow linked to an update from Mircrosoft - I have heard of one or two others who had similar bluescreening problems and then the problem "just went away" or got updated and fixed - I think its also a limited area problem hence why its not more well known about the place - possibly a software and/or hardware configuration
