Dell Insufficient Memory to boot Windows
    « on: August 17, 2008, 06:07:19 PM »
I have a problem getting a Dell to start windows.

    Dell Dimension 4600i
    1.5 gig RAM
    Pentium 4
Hard drive 10 gig Seagate U series
Win 2000 (Pre loaded from another computer)
    Service Tag 7XKZ91S

This Dell hasnt had a Drive in it since Ive had it. Ihave tried other drives in it and the result is the same.
It posts and initialies asking for F2 = Setup
                                                     F12 = Boot Menu
After entering F12 the computer loads windows (the Logo appears) and then a blue screen with STOP Inaccessable boot device (as in the photo)
Can someone please advise me how I can get this drive (or any drive) to get past this screen.

    This is unclear.
    You say:

This Dell hasnt had a Drive in it since Ive had it.
Then, you say, it has windows 2000 preinstalled.
On what, since it doesn't have any hard drive?
If you're trying to put new hard drive into this computer, after installing the drive, you have to boot from Windows CD to format the drive, and install Windows on it.
    Please, explain your situation better.

      Thank you Broni.
I got the computer with No Hard Drive in it.
I put a 10 gig Seagate from another computer in the Dell. The Seagate has Win 2000 installed.

So I need the Win 2000 CD and to boot from cold with the CD in the Dell CD player, to format the Seagate and then reinstall Win 2000.

Hmmm, I dont know if I have that CD, However I do have XP Pro SP3.

Do I have to format it or can I upgrade to XP Pro?

Will that do the same job?

Even, if Seagate has Win 2000 installed on it, Windows won't work, when hard drive is out into another computer.
The hard drive has to be formatted, and Windows reinstalled.
Computer specs look OK for Windows XP, except for.....10 gig hard drive. It's really small. As a matter of fact for any Windows.
I mean, there is enough space to install any Windows, but you're gonna have really small storage space.
These days, you can buy 500GB hard drive for under $100, so I wouldn't even bother with 10GB drive.

Yes Broni I agree its a small drive. I really just wanted to get the Dell working, but Ive had a series of other problems to rectify.Heat sink overheating chip, bios battery flat, so on.
I just had a drive "to put in it" to fire it up.
I think I will just buy a new drive now that the Dell is functioning and seems to be a good runner. Thank you for your help.
