Laptop Connecting to Router VIA Ethernet
    « on: August 18, 2008, 06:55:42 AM »
I just recieved a new old IBM Thinkpad (i Series 1161-52U), and there is an Ethernet port at the back. Now, it runs Windows 2000, which I am less familiar with, but I used the wizard to have it connect to the internet VIA LAN. Now, I try it, and it's not connected at all. It's not shown in the network on my other computers, and the router hasn't acknowledged it yet. I went into Device Manager, and nothing is missing drivers. Please help!

It should be as easy as plugging the Internet Cable (LAN Cable) into the Router and then to the Computer.

If you're sure the setup is right, let us know and we'll explore more options as to why this problem might exist.

The internet cable? Isn't it the ethernet cable?

      This is my current setup:

      Yep, Ethernet Cable.  :D

The setup seems ok. I'm actually not very familiar with Windows 2000 but does it not say it is connected?
Have you tried restarting the computer, and then plugging it in?

I just tried resetting it a few times, and still nothing.

There are no changes, that I know of when I plug it in.

Hmmmm.......Just in case there is a fault in the cable, t suggest you try another cable and see if you can get connected.

        At Command Prompt, type in:
        ipconfig /all
        Hit Enter.
        Post results.

I know it's not a faulty cable because it works with the other computers... and the results are:

          Code: [Select]
          Windows 2000 IP Configuration

          Host Name: heliodore
          Primary DNS Sufiix:
          Node Type: Broadcast
          IP Routing Enabled: No
          WINS Proxy Enabled: No

That didn't seem to do anything.

MORE INFO: In the dial-up and networks window, there is no LAN connection specified, and when I click add connection, it doesn't seem to have any options for adding Networks, only Dial-Up.

I suspect, ethernet card is shot. New one - ~$15.

Oh. I didn't exactly know I needed an ethernet card, you know, there already being a port there.

EDIT: I found this one, I think it would work... http://www.factorydirect.ca/catalog/product_spec.php?pcode=BE7010

                Got it, works completely great...

although, now I've realized (haven't used the wireless function on the router for a while), that it's router companion seems to be... only allowing connection for a while of time. Like, it'll give internet access for a while, but then for another while, you'll be connected, but anything else on the network will be inaccessible (including internet).

                Laptop IP: 192.168.2.6
                Gateway: 192.168.2.1
                DNS: 192.168.2.1
                Router IP: 192.168.2.1

I don't know if it's a problem that 3 of those numbers are the same...

I'm glad, it worked, and then, I don't understand:
