Hmm... with non music/video it works fine, with music I copied the tracks from a CD using iTunes and still nothing plays.

I would wait for a second opinion on this but, if VLC can't play it (even when you copied to your Hard Drive), I suspect a damaged CD Drive......Unless you have information on the contrary?

Dang, I was hoping it wasn't that. So anyone know why word documents and program files can be read no problem?

What exactly happens when you try to play any music, or video?
Is your drive listed in Windows Explorer, and Device Manager without any errors?

Yes it is listed, and as for what happens exactly:
I've tried Media Player classic, VLC,  and Windows Media Player for movies and those plus iTunes for music, all with the same result. They can read the file names, know how long the tracks are, display the name of the artist, and how many scenes there are, and can even play the first few seconds of the beginnings sometimes, but then nothing happens. With music some of them just don't play, the thing just says 0:00 of 4:38 or whatever, others start counting as if it is playing, but no sound. With movies it just freezes after a moment.

Online video and sound, like games, youtube, etc work without a problem.

What about media files already on your computer?

They also don't work, but youtube and online video/music seems to be fine.

Ok. So, now we know media from the web is fine. However, all media on your computer isn't.

          Well I'm stumped.

Unless anyone else has any ideas, I suggest looking here:
          http://www.computerhope.com/forum/index.php/topic,46313.0.html
Post the three logs in the Computer Virus and Spyware Section with a link to this topic and we will have a look for malware in your computer that may be the cause of this.

Well after a long chat with a Dell representative we determined the problem was corruption with Windows Vista. Restoring the computer to factory settings fixed it.

Of course it did. I'm sure a Repair Install of Windows would have fixed it too......
Factory Reset - Brings the computer back to the first time you started it - easy.

Oh well, glad you got it working,
