ava.exe no "run" ,Task manager, safe mode..
    « on: August 19, 2008, 09:40:29 PM »
OK, I screwed up. i have a bug. It wont let me into my drives, run option, task manager ,safe mode (although I did try a string I found on line in the "run" and it let me into task Mgr) But I cant get into ms config or regedit through "run". Happened after a download...had AVA.EXE in dos command for a split second and then all this happened.
Just trying to accomplish a complete recovery as there really is nothing on this computer worth allot of effort if I can just dump it all and reinstall xp.
Put in my xp disc but no good as it only says that I have an updated version already and it wont load.
This computer did not have any virus protection and so I installed the norton that came with the computer(post problem, but outdated)...but "admin rights" wont allow full install..Its off line right now(still have control of that)
keeps popping up a anti virus program that I did not install and runs itself until I stop it...wont go away either. As soon as I minimize it...a few minutes later its back up.
When I try F8 when booting, it just stays black and wont run...pushing the on/off button shuts it down though.
So if anyone can help me get into this turd, I'd appreciate it...the kids hate me right now as this was their gaming/homework/music computer...nothing that cannot be reinstalled I'm sure.

What a terrible parent you are.  I kid, I kid.  Seriously, though, it sounds like you've got yourself a nasty little infection there.  What exactly did you download?  I'm assuming it was probably illegal, as pirated material usually comes with the really fun viruses.

If you can manage to get the programs to work, you need to read the instructions in this thread and post back with the three requested logs.  If you have trouble, try to at least get the HJT log...

I went to the link for sp1a(http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp1/default.mspx)
it has sp3 there...is that what I need or is sp1a in there somewere?
Also I'm going to have to copy that sp1a onto a flash card and transfer as I really don't want to have the affected computer on line, unless you think that wont work.
To answer your question: I was downloading a video and it said I needed this certain program to run it...(trying not to drool on keyboard)
Well, I'm at work so I'll do all that tomarrow....going home now(dragging knuckles and walking with a stoop)

Don't worry about SP1a just yet.  Let's just see what kind of situation we're dealing with first.  Just download SUPERAntiSpyware, MBAM, and HijackThis and post their logs.  If you would prefer to use a flashdrive, that should work just fine.

I replaced it with the only link I have offhand.  It's not as "pretty", but it works for now.  If you have anything better, feel free to make the necessary change.

I couldn't find a decent one. MS seems to have hidden it as it used to be easy to find.

No worries, stupid (ha ha, I couldn't resist).  Take as much time as you need and I will try to work with you at a pace you are comfortable with.  Whenever you're ready, we'll be here to take a look at your logs.
