Lost "My Computer" icon AND more...
« on: August 21, 2008, 01:57:49 AM »
Not only is "My Computer" icon gone from my desktop, but it is also dsabled from the "right click" on desktop, then "properties" - "Desktop" tab and then "Configure Desktop."  The ICON is there, but the option to make it available on the desktop is "grayed out," so to speak, so I cannot put a "checkmark" in that box.

When I do pull "My Computer" up using Win Explorer and it expands to show all of my drives, it only shows the drives in the tree on the left, but NOT in the folder/explorer window when you click on "My Computer."

I recently had some issues with some infections of a few different kinds, but through the use of several tools and lots of clean up and log review, I'm fairly certain I've cleared my PC of all invaders.  I am guessing that one of these "guests" were responsible for this "My Computer" change.

Would this be a registry issue or possibly have something to do with one of my Windows start-up files, such as win.ini or sys.ini or any others?

I'm running Windows XP SP2 on a Dell 8300 with 2.4Ghz MP and 512MB RAM with a Pentium4 MP.

Any help or suggestions would be most appreciated.

Thanks,
John

If you think it's the cause of a virus, I strongly suggest you look here:
http://www.computerhope.com/forum/index.php/topic,46313.0.html

Once you post the three required logs, one of our Malware Specialists will help reverse the effects.

In the mean time, I will move this to the Computer Virus and Spyware Forum.
