Dual boot XP and 2000
« on: August 22, 2008, 05:46:45 AM »
Hello!

I am right now installing windows 2000 on one of the PC with Windows XP installed here at the office. I am planning to do dual boot with this PC. However, I´ve read from one site that you have to installed WIndows XP last to enable dual boot. Is there a way that I wont reinstall again XP?

Thanks in advance!  ;D
Specs are as follows
Asus P5L VM1394, 1Gig RAM, Intel Core2Duo 1.8Ghz,
80Gig HD which is:
C:=WindowsXP=20Gig
D:=Windows2000=20Gig
E:=data drive=40Gig

Thanks in advance!!

    The only simple way is to install 2000 and then XP.  If that's not possible, you may be able to find 3rd party software to make the computer dual boot after installing 2000.  I don't know of any off the top of my head, but using Google I once found software to do this with installing Vista and then XP which is kind of the same situation.

      aha ,it's no need  of the 3rd part tools.

      Just install it (there are the steps)

      step1: backup the "c:\boot.ini" file you can just copy it to you "E:"
      step2:install win2k(I assume you know the way)
      step3:edit "c:\boot.ini" add the boot menu item of XP in the file backuped in step1

      the above steps is for IDE hard drive. if you are using SATA you must use follow step:(do step2 above)
      boot up the computer into Recovery Console(the 'R' item on the install cd menu and the other two is 'Enter' and 'F3')with your install cd
      use this command :
      Code: [Select]
      bootcfg /rebuild
      I have no idea about the settings ,if you are use other type of hard disk.
      btw ,all above is based on ONLY one drive computer.

      more infomation about the Recovery Console
      (the content of these three pages is mostly of same,you can watch any one of them)
