    Laptop internet woes
    « on: August 24, 2008, 05:21:22 AM »
    Hi Guys.
Not sure if this is the right place for this topic, but I couldnt decide which title it would best fall under.

Ive just bought the ladyfriend a laptop. A TOSHIBA P200D-139.
    From Currys http://www.currys.co.uk/martprd/store/cur_page.jsp?page=Product&source_id=aw&sku=701900&camp_id=Reevoo.com&source_id=aw&camp_id=Reevoo.com
    Sorry for the huge link!

Anyway, all seems fine and dandy, until we try and access the internet.
It will access some sites no problem, but others hang and wont load at all.
We're on a wireless connection if that makes any difference, but some sites work fine.

Examples of sites NOT working include Facebook, Miniclip and Wink Bingo, so I thought first there may be some kind of restriction like you would expect of a work PC, but other similar sites like Myspace, Mousebreaker and William Hill DO work, so Im stumped.

Ive tried turning Windows Firewall off, same with Norton, which came pre installed on the laptop. Then I completely uninstalled Norton as it was only a 3 month trial jobby anyway, but its made no difference at all.
If I type in the actual IP address for Facebook, it accesses the page as if its working, but then when I try for log in details, it hangs permanently again.
Ive emptied the SSL cache, emtied cookies, empties all offline content. All no joy.

    I now have 3 options.

    1. Leave myself in your capable hands and hope you can shine a light of wisdom on me
    2. Take the *censored* thing to Currys and hope theres one employee who's over 12 who has a clue
    3. Throw the laptop out of a window

Obviously, the options are in order of likelihood, but number 3 may well make a shock comeback!!

Hope someone can offer up some assistance?

    Thanks in advance.

    Allan (absolutely no clue)

    What browser are you using?

Try going to command prompt (start, run, "cmd"), and type "ping facebook.com" (without quotes). If you get a response, copy the IP address and paste it into the address line of your browser.

    Do you get anything?

Ive tried using Firefox and IE. Both the same.
Ive just spent half an hour on the phone to Tech Support, and the guy on the phone has now run out of ideas too.
Only option he has left is Restore the system, but we didnt get a restore disk, and theres no restore on the HD ::)
Got to go to Currys and get a disk before I continue.

      Havent tried it wired actually.

      Will do now.

As for Pinging Facebook. Thats how i got the IP addy.
      Still no joy.

Might go to Currys now and 'inconvenience' them. See if theyll swap it for me.

You don't need a restore disk. That's only to format the whole system! ;D

Try a system restore first, to a few days ago.

Most likely. Either by warranty or by receipt.

Currys as a shop dont give a crap. >:(

        Suggested updating the javascript.

Then blamed the network as opposed to the laptop.

Then said if it needs to go back it will have to be through Currys online as 'theyre a different company' ???

        Next stop, java country

Accidentally drop the laptop and get it fixed for free under warranty.  :P

So exactly what are you doing now?  ???

Ran the java detection page on both the pc and the laptop.
PC did it in about 30-40 seconds.
Laptop is still stuck after 5 minutes.
              I think its hung up.

Have you tried downloading Java from their website?
