Is it still under warranty?  Its not a Driver issue if it happens in safe mode as well. It sounds like a connector has come loose. Probably need someone to open it up and check all the connectors.

This is not neccessarily true if it is a cold boot....the monitor may not warm up enough to catch the post screen....
He would need to leave the machine / monitor on for a few minutes and then do a re-boot to test this.
