drive says disc full when in fact its empty
    « on: August 26, 2008, 09:30:54 AM »
    Hi all,
I cannot burn to cd as when I put the disc in the drive tells me the disc is full ! when in fact it is a new clean cd-r, I have also found when I go to my computor/drive/properties, it says disc full when there is not a disc in the drive.

    Can anyone help.

    Thanks

Sounds like the Drive is broken. Can it still read CDs? Did you recently add any software to the computer or install any upgrades to the OS?

The quickest test would be to replace the drive with a new one. That's likely the problem. However, it could be software. I haven't heard about MS breaking anything, but its is possible, even if unlikely.

        Hi Raydude,
It is not a hardware fault as I have fitted a new one because I could not get the old one to burn.

        Thanks.

Its a software problem then. Unfortunately that's beyond my scope. When I use windows to burn it always just works. I can't imaging what could be messed up.

The only thing I can think to try is to reinstall your burning software and check to see if there are any updates available.

You might want to search http://support.microsoft.com to see if others have reported this problem and see what MS tech suggest for fixes.

The other idea is to revert to a previously known good configuration by pressing F8 when you boot and select it from the menu.

However, any software installed since the last known good configuration will disappear.

My guess is an upgrade from MS or a software you installed broke something. Sorry I can't be more help.

Oh. The last resort is of course a full reinstall. A lot of work to say the least.

What Windows version? What burning program? Burning CDs, DVDs, or both?
