    Random Skips/freezes while gaming
    « on: August 26, 2008, 03:24:30 PM »
    Hi,

I play a lot of Call of Duty 4 online, and every now and then, the game freezes for a minute second or so. I'm trying to figure out if this is because of ram, the network connection, or something else, so I can fix it.

    PC Specs:
    Athlon 64 Dual 3800+
BFG Geforce 8800GT 512MB RAM (Factory Overclocked)
    3 GB RAM ( 2x1, 2x512 - Windows only recognizes 2.5 GB of RAM )

    Network specs:
    Cable 8Mbps
    Shared through a router
    Hardwire connection to the router.

I'm going to try taking a ram stick out (so there's only as much ram as windows recognizes).

I suspect this is due to the internet connection.

Thanks for any help & God Bless

Is 2.5GB Single Channel Mode RAM better than 2GB in Dual Channel?

Is it Vista? Does it happen in that game only?
What are computer temperatures while you're playing?

It's XP. Sometimes there's freezes out of game, when I'm doing a lot. I'm pretty sure computer temperatures are fine (GPU around 57). How do I check the Processor temp?

I removed a ram module and it seems to be noticeably better - as in, Windows only recognizes 2.5GB of the ram, and I had 3 GB in. So I removed one of the 512 Sticks. Now it seems to be better.

With the 3GB of ram, the computer was in dual channel mode(2x1GB, 2x512), now it's in single channel mode(2x1GB,1x512). Which is why i asked if 2GB of ram in dual channel is better than 2.5 in single channel.

I'll keep this post updated on performance.

        Thanks & God Bless

This could potentially be a computer specific issue..
What computer manufacturer do you have? And what model number?

Also, what kind of Video Card do you have?

I built the pc on my own.

Get SpeedFan: http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php, and post temps, while idle, and while playing a game.

Definitely...your processor max temp is listed at 65C, so while playing, you're getting close to damage level.
39-57C(!) idle is also not acceptable.

It looks from the screenshot, that fan1, and fan3 are not working. Open the case, and see what's happening.

Fan 1 & Fan 3 I think are generic case fans directly hooked to the power - I can see that they are working.

These are the fans I have:
1 Fan/HS on CPU (Custom Bought)
                3 Generic Case Fans
                2 Fans on the PSU
                1 Fan on the GPU

It's a transparent case. I have no idea which fan corresponds to which on the SpeedFan software. I'm assuming it can only detect the speed for the CPU Fan.

I ensured that the thermal paste was applied properly while setting it up, and I've used this setup for close to a year now.

Any suggestions will be helpful - gonna try using SpeedFan more, maybe use it's auto feature and try.

                Thanks & God Bless

While going through the speedfan help & howto manual, I found the following text below a picture:

Those flames are not actually a problem. They are due to the fact that SpeedFan has been initially configured (by me) to expect lower values. Temperatures have been sorted trying to put at the top those that make more sense.

I'm definitely not hardware guy, so may need to wait for someone else to advice you on further proceeding.
In the meantime, I'd turn computer off, open the case, and give it a good cleaning with compressed air. Leave the case open, use house fan to cool computer down, and see, if it helps.

They're not, but the numbers are.
