beep, beep beep beep, beep. Black screen?
    « on: August 28, 2008, 04:56:46 AM »
Hi, Ive got my old computer out to give to my son, but it has a black screen and beeps at startup. one three then one beep.
Nothing comes up on the screen.
I cant find anything on the mobo to identify it.
It is an OLD computer. It used to work well. I was just curious if it would go.
Ive since changed the drive probably WIN95, and 4 gig.
Ive tried other drives, changed the screen to another, taken out the battery to reset the bios removed the cables to the CD and floppy, but always the same start up beeps.
I looked at the beep codes here http://www.computerhope.com/beep.htm. and here CH000304.
    Well Im confused ...
How would I go about getiing this going please?

I can't find anything on our Beep page.

I would first try reseating the RAM. (remove it and then reinsert it).
Try each RAM Stick one at a time and see if your computer works or not.

So the other hard drive booted properly?

What Operating System was it originally and what OS isn't working?

I tried Ctl Alt D (not DELETE) letter d. and run the diagnostic it recognized the sata drive but I couldnt load xp via the CD player. So I changed drives to the 13 Gig with win98 on it, rebooted and it loaded windows and works fine now. The CD and the floppy dont work yet though. My next move was the computer with the black screen and beeps, if I cant get it going I'll hack out the parts use the CD player and floppy in the Dell.

Oh, so the CD Drive isn't working?

After you check the connections. Can you check to see if it is recognized in the BIOS?

Great news. Reseating the ram seems to have kicked a goal, Ive got the IBM to post but the drive was clicking., so I put another drive in and all I get to is the post with IBM symbol. and it wont go past the it.
F1 doesnt work to get into the setup.

Can you verify the Hard Drive was clicking? If so, stop using it.

Now with the other HD set to boot from, what exactly happens from the point you press the power button?

Yes the other drive is defnately clicking. I think it died.
Ive just put in a 4 gig caviar.
So from power it posts and memory tests, drives all engage and extended memory goes through its sequence.
Screen comes up withBlue IBM insignia in centre screen.
System memory 640 in the top left corner
              extended memory underneath 31744
Press F1 for config/setup and Esc for fast post underneath located in the bottom left corner of the screen.
Top right of screen has a box, white outline and n"s within the box above but inside the box outline is the number 5E.
When I press esc for fast post this happens, but then nothing else when I press the F1 it doesnt have any result.
Hitting Ctl Alt Del during startup ends up with a screen that has copyright all rights reserved on the top line of the screen. and to the right hand top corner the post sequence numbers are 48  57  then changes to  59  then to  5E and a cxursor blinking in the top left corner of the screen.
