Advice needed.
« on: August 28, 2008, 07:22:18 PM »
As of next week, I will be living in Bakersfield, CA.  This means that I can finally upgrade to broadband.  Unfortunately, I don't know a good deal when I see one, so I'm a bit stuck at the moment.  And sadly, because I've never had broadband, I don't know a whole lot about it.  But I've been looking around all day and I've got it narrowed down to what I think are the four best deals...

AT&T Elite: http://www.att.com/gen/general?pid=10938
BlooSpeed Max (1-year contract): http://www.mybloo.com/default.asp?fn=sr_dsl
Earthlink Super Fast Cable (6 or 7 Mbps): http://www.earthlink.net/access
Sonic.net Elite Residential: http://sonic.net/sales/broadband/dsl/elite_residential.shtml

I'm having trouble deciding which one is the best deal.  Earthlink seems like a good way to go, but I'm not sure.  Keep in mind that I don't have a modem, so I will need that as well.  I already have a router for my fiancé's laptop...will I need anything extra for this to be supported or should these plans work fine for that?  Sadly, I'm a total newbie when it comes to broadband.

Note: Just in case anyone's wondering...it doesn't matter if it's DSL or Cable.  I just need it to be fast, reliable, and affordable.

If price doesn't matter, I'd definitely go for cable over DSL.
Earthlink looks good.
Modems are usually provided by ISP for a small fee. Some people like to have own modems, but I'm not sure about it. Just in case, it breaks, you have to pay for a new one.

Yeah, there's a fairly decent chance that I'll give Earthlink a try.  After all, it's only $30/mo for the first 6 months, and as far as I can tell, it doesn't appear to require a contract.

Hmm...30 bucks for 7-8Mb cable is pretty decent price.

That sounds great to me - I'm paying $30 for 1.5Mbps DSL - Denver.

I suggest you call 1-800-EARTHLINK (1-800-327-8454) to verify that offer does not require a contract.  Well, actually, it clearly requires a contract for 6 months.  And, the six month notation implies, IMO, that the $30 may be a special price for the first 6 months and the regular monthly price will be higher after the first 6 months.

Whichever one of these services you choose, you'll probably find they lead you to believe you need to install software provided by them to help you get connected and to install some kind of security package (anti-virus/spyware/spam/etc.) from them.  Keep in mind their software is really not required and I suggest avoiding it.  I'm a former Earthlink DSL customer (had to switch to another service due to change in local telecom provider) and I never installed their software.   Likewise, I got my mother to switch from her dialup service to AT&T DSL.  We initially installed their software package but I found it slowed her computer so I uninstalled it.

I second that - absolutely no software needed in my case but a CD Install disk was presented.

Thanks for the link, Steve, but the best deal on there is almost the same price; just with a different company.  Heh.

I agree.  Many people around here still pay $25 a month for 48.8 Kbps dial-up.

Thanks for the advice.  I figured they would try to push their software on me, but I have no intention of using any of it.  As far as I'm concerned, my current protection is better than anything they'd give me.  And I could've sworn that I read something on their site saying that no contract was required...I'm going to have to make a call later to find out for sure.  It's not a huge concern, though.  As long as the service is reliable, I don't mind a contract.

I do have something that I'm a bit confused about, however.  On their site, they say that a TV subscription isn't required, but the internet service will show up on my cable bill.  How exactly does that work?  Am I going to have to pay any extra fees?  The only way we can afford broadband is by not having cable.  I'm going to call both Earthlink and the local cable company for info about this, but I thought I'd ask here first because customer service agents never seem to know what they're talking about.  Or when they do, all they care about is getting more money out of you.

Hm, well, it looks like if I do have to pay for cable, at least I can get it as cheap as $14 a month.

I'm done thinking about this for now.  I need a grown-up to handle everything for me!

Just so everyone knows, I ended up going with Road Runner through BrightHouse Networks.  It's $33 a month for what I believe is a 7 Mbps connection.  I'm downloading at an average of 700 - 900 KB/s, so I'm quite pleased.  It definitely beats my previous average of 5 KB/s!  If anyone's curious, here are results from SpeedTest...

Yeah, the guy came over today to install everything today, so I've been pretty happy.  I even decided to declare this as Internet Day.  Ha.
