Is it AVG you reinstalled, or Windows?

You could try another free anti-virus: Avira etc.

If this is AVG 8.0, get rid of it.

I have AVG and also had problems with downloading updates on Fri. & Sat.
29 & 30 Aug. I think the web site might have been having problems.
On Sunday Aug 31 everything was fine. I have been using AVG for 2 years and it has performed great. As far as other Anti Virus programs being smaller and faster I can not comment as I have never used anything else.

Just download the updates from the AVG site to a folder where you can find them and open the AVG interface and press Tools and Update from directory then point to the correct folder and AVG will do the rest.

??? I don't see a question here. He's just commenting on his experience with AVG, as it relates to OP's problem.  I'm using AVG 8 with Win XP SP3 and observed similar behavior to delta dart's experience, in the same time frame.
