Are Both Drives SATA? Is it the original that stops working when you install the new one, or the new one that won't work?

      Are Both Drives SATA?

      Indeed.

Anyhow, you may need to do some adjusting in your BIOS.  If you don't know how to do that, people here can help.
Also, we're a little short on info.  Which drives work...when?

Maybe you could name your drives A & B and then give us information about how they work.

For example, if A is the drive you already had, and B is the new one:
      A works now.
      A works when I install B, but B doesn't work.
B is not recognized at all.  It's like I never installed it.

See, that would give us some decent info.

Also, if B is recognized but not usable:
Have you formatted the new drive?  All new hard drives need to be formatted before use.

      -rock
In general, the PEBKAC.  Whether it's now or was three weeks ago, the PEBKAC.
Unsafe browsing and general computer / internet illiteracy IS the users problem.  Don't have sex if you don't know how to use a condom.
Also, there are 10 types of people in the world, those who understand binary, and those who don't.
