Spyware
« on: March 09, 2005, 04:42:49 PM »
I am havivg a problem with what I believe is a script that is being executed.  Whenever I establish an internet connection (dialup) spyware cookies and files are loaded onto my machine, even though I have not started a browser.  This happens with ever connection.  I can see through my modem statistics that I am sending far more data than I should.  I run my spyware remover after every online session and it detects the same cookies and files every time.  OS is Widows 2000 Pro SP2.  Any ideas? Thanks

    Security setting is Medium.
As to Spyware, I've got SpywareXTerminator and I've tried SpySubtract and Spydoctor.  I've got Norton AntiVirus (although I didn't have it when these problems started, which I'm sure is how they got in).

jaq....... Go to ...  http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx      Download Antispyware (Beta)

Give it a go and see what it finds...... Be sure and turn on the auto updates.

I downloaded the Microsoft antivirus but cannot install it until I install SP4 for Windows2K.  When I tried ti install the SP I got an error that stated it could not verify the integrity of the update.inf file and to verify that the cryptographic service was installed on the machine.  I do not have an update.inf file on the machine. I'm in a catch 22 here

Ooo, worst case scenario (might be obvious and might've already been said) it'll be what I call a "DialUpload".  If u are using Dialup, that's bad, it could continue to grow.  Or, it could be just a simple pest.  and as you all know, a pest is annoying.  I don't know if I should've posted this, but I just wanted to say something I thought needed to be said.

My guess is it is a 'dialupload'.  How do I get rid of it? Will removing my dial up s/w and reinstalling resolve it?

      Hi
Just my personal, opinion think you would be better off with Ad-awareSE and spybot search and destroy, the scanner from microsoft is said to be very good but you say you can't run it.
      Ad-awareSE http://www.snapfiles.com/get/adaware.html

      spybot http://www.safer-networking.org/

      spybot tutorial http://www.safer-networking.org/en/tutorial/index.html

Would prob be a good idea to also download spywareguard and spywareblaster
      SPYWAREBLASTER
      http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

      SPYWAERGUARD
      http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html

spydoctor is not that good, if you go to the link below gives a list rouge and suspect spyware products, also take a look at Trustworthy spyware products http://spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm

If you want to get your PC checked out for spyware then go to help2go and follow All the procedures in this link and then copy and paste your log in the help2go detective, you must follow ALL the procedures before you post a hijackthis log in the spyware forum
