Coffee Spilled On Keyboard, Something Damaged
« on: September 07, 2008, 05:50:30 PM »
Can someone help me? Coffee was spilled on the keyboard of the Sony VAIO PCV RS410. Nothing worked after this happened. Replaced the keyboard, computer acted crazy, nothing worked right. Did the restore, most things worked as before, except everything is extremely slow. Internet (dialup) much slower than before. replaced the modem, that didn't help. I will be grateful if someone can help me.

PS This is a desk top. The spilled coffee was a teaspoon full, it only touched the keyboard.

Just my thoughts but - how much coffee?  Slurp or cup full?

While keyboards do not like liquids the question might be - how much liquid might have gotten beyond and under keyboard.?

Keyboards themselves can be cleaned or replaced but after that - sometimes all bets are off - so seems you may have to inspect deeper.

Sounds like your problems persisting could be in effect hardware oriented.
Ain't technology great - until it goes wrong!

please tell me that was some kind of humorous reference to people who give the exact same advice regardless of what the problem is.

the VAIO, is a laptop, I believe- this may explain the behaviour, as it appears the joe has managed to get itself into the laptop case and run amuck with the IO sockets (Modem, mouse, keyboard, etc..).

The best solution would be to try to get it cleaned by somebody who knows what their doing inside the case. (not saying it will be cheap). Of course, you could risk it yourself and crack'er open, see if it's still fresh inside.

I do, and I've never had a mishap. Except that time a bear jumped out of my oven and threw my cat in my rabbit cage, but I'm sure that was unrelated to the fact that I had a cup of tea near my computer.

the VAIO, is a laptop, I believe-
This is a desktop - a teaspoonful of coffee on a desktop keyboard.

Hard to tell...I guess any key combination could have occurred; after the spill, did the system do anything noticeable? What were you doing on the computer at the time of the spill?

If you don't have time to do it right
...when will you have time to do it over?

unless the keyboard in question is really expensive or fancy (meaning they have one other then the one included) it would probably just be easier to get a nice cheap one somewhere. (even if only for temporary use.)

I never said I've never spilled it, I've had quite a few close calls. Usually it just ended up on me though. The bear incident had me on edge for a while. "how did a bear get in the oven? What drove it to place my cat in my rabbit cage? How did it pick up the cat when it lacks opposable thumbs, or fingers, for that matter?" These are questions that will plague me forever. At least that is what my psychologist says.
