Do I have to have my laptop switched on to charge the battery? (yes it's plugged in to mains)

Is it the original laptop charger?

    How old is the battery?

Wait a sec, Sorry. I misread your question.  :-\

The laptop will still charge if it is switched off. If the battery is done charging, it will automatically not overcharge the battery.

Most laptops charge whether they are in use or "off" if the power adapter is connected to the mains and the laptop.

The charging rate will be lower (take longer to charge) if the laptop is being used.
If you don't have time to do it right
...when will you have time to do it over?
