WD My Book Home Edition 500GB installation
    « on: September 12, 2008, 04:17:32 PM »
I just bought a WD My Book Home Edition 500GB for my 2005 Dell Inspirion E1705 notebook that has XP SP3, and it does not come with an installation CD, it is supposed to install when you plug it in and XP is supposed to support it. It shows up in device manager as "other devices" with a yellow question mark, but does not show up at all in disc management, therefore I can't assign a drive letter. It also does not show up in My Computer. There are no drivers for this. I tried plugging directly into the wall, that didn't help.

    Welcome to ComputerHope

If you know the model number of the new drive, go to the Manufacturers Website and download and install the drivers for it.

Can you give us the model number.

Does it work on another computer?

How does it connect to the computer?

That's an external Hard Drive, right?

When you plug the power in, Do you hear the drive spin or see any other signs that it is working? My external has a light on the front that comes on when you plug it in.

If there are no signs of life then you either have a bad power cord or a bad hard dive. If it's new, I'm sure you can return or exchange it.

It probably shipped unformatted...you will need to format it first for Windows to detect it.
The Free Data Lifeguard diagnostic tools will prepare it for use and are available at WD's site...

No, I have tried all of the available downloads from WD website. You cannot format a drive that does not show up in Disk Manager.

I have tried plugging it directly into the wall, I have tried a different USB cord, nothing seems to work.

The My Book powers up fine and the disk spins, but it will not install.

I beg to differ...and if you had DLoaded and made the Data Lifeguard Tools as i suggested you would be done by now...
they don't run inside Windows at all...

I did download the Data Lifeguard Tools. THEY DON'T WORK if your My Book is not listed in the Disk Manager!

I went to CostCo and exchanged the drive and the new one works fine. It was a faulty drive.

The proper Data Lifeguard Tools are used to create a bootable CD to prep the drive for use...it doesn't even see Windows.

          Glad you're fixed up though.

Now the new one is doing the exact same thing. The Data Lifeguard Tools has no option whatsoever to create any bootable CD to prep the drive for use.....

That's because you are using the Windows version...
            Use This Link
And follow the instructions for using a floppy or a bootable CD...

They have changed their site drastically since my last visit and are making things far more difficult than they need to be...

I just plugged the WD into my girlfriends computer and it works fine, but my Dell E1705 still does not recognize it.

I went to the link you provided, but it is for a WD Caviar Internal Hard Drive, but mine is a WD My Book External Hard Drive.....

Do you have a ton of USB devices plugged into your computer?  If so, there's probably not enough power (each bus supports 500mA).

Part of the problem is most people don't generally deal with computer problems. So for most they think that close enough is good enough.

No, I have no other USB devices plugged in.
