The point is to welcome new members.  I think that's the 5th time that's been said.

Wow, your about as bright as a burnt out thirty watt light bulb man. The point is that "new" members will SEE your senseless bickering and run away thinking they won't get any help

Wow, thanks for the flame.  And I have only been responding to Dias's comments.  But really, thanks for the flame.  I will stop the "pointless" bickering.

For those that want to, go and welcome Lynn.

The great unwashed?  Please tell me you were being sarcastic.

The phrase "the great unwashed" is almost invariably used with ironic intent in British English, simply meaning any larger group perceived to be less privileged than another smaller one. My boss gets to put his car in the company car park, whereas I have to use the street along with the rest of the great unwashed.

I'm sorry if I don't understand you sometimes, but I'm not from Britain.

Welcome Kirk in the welcome thread.

I got a thank you for the PM I sent a new member.  I won't say his name though.

I don't have time to do a personal welcome for the new member, so someone else needs to.  I'm leaving for somewhere.

An automatic message would be the opposite of the point of this, which is a personal welcome.

No-one had time to welcome Rey?  On a Saturday?  You know, just because we already have three members doesn't mean there can't be more.  No-one on the entire forum had time?

typhoeus, why are you so crazy about this welcoming thing? Can't you give it a rest?

I think it kind of makes sense, somewhat- look it all the members that have 1 or 2 posts, they resolve one problem, and forget it, never to return to CH. I'm not sure what it would do, but maybe they'd feel more inclined to help others if they see the community is so lively.

Yes, maybe so, but I just felt that Typhus was getting a bit testy with people for not stepping up to the plate when he wrote this

No-one on the entire forum? His ambitions to control appear to be kind of global.

Dias, are you a conspiracy theorist?  What I was saying is this:

There are many, many people who have the welcome thread appear in their updated topics list.  I was hoping that at least one of them would feel inclined to make the new member feel welcome.  At least one of them must have been on at some point on Saturday.  Just one?

typhoeus, why are you so crazy about this welcoming thing? Can't you give it a rest?

Can you give hating it a rest?

In short, there's a reason that most forums have an automatic type of welcome thread created. Even SaviourPC, another forum which is MUCH less active them CH right now, and at the current time new members are only trickling in, has it setup to automatically create a welcome thread and also an automatic PM is sent to that member, with a link to that thread. I personally think this is a good compromise between added work and personalization, the PM has a different link, and so gives the appearance of being more personalized.

Right now, it would be quite possible to welcome each new member individually. However, as more members (we hope) start joining, it will become more difficult for moderators/administrators to sort out exactly who has been welcomed and who hasn't (a problem which has already cropped up here). Although it's feasible to create a mod where moderators are dealt welcome responsibilities in a round robin style, the monotony of welcoming various people whose aptitudes and ineptitudes one can only guess becomes a bore, and they end up writing essentially the same thing over and over again.

So it's feasible, but it isn't a scalable solution, it follows Parker's law far too closely. (work will expand to fill the time to finish it)

I'm not saying it's a bad idea. Ok, so that's sort of what I'm saying, but it's a thoughtful effort, that's for sure.
