    hard disk keeps losing space

    Operating Vista on dual-boot (Ubuntu) lenovo with 104 gig hard drive.  The free space on the HD keeps decreasing even after running disk cleanup and uninstalling programs I don't need.  I used to have about 50% free, now down to 20%.  I also use Mozy virtual back up.  Ubuntu is running as a Windows app but only takes up about 15 gigs.  I'm mystified ???.

    Not sure what Mozy Virtual BackUp is do you think this may be the problem here?
    Perhaps it is constantly making backups and using your disk space.

      Mozy is a virtual b/u so it does not b/u on the HD.  The program itself is about 17 MB.  Thanks for looking though.  BTW, Mozy will b/u up to 2 GB for free.

      I'm curious as to where it backs up? Where does it save all the b/u's?

        check the volume for errors. Right click on it> properties>tools>check now. Thats all I can think of.

        Any Norton products on this machine ?
        When did this start ?
        What protection apps do you have and when were the last scans ?

        Indexing service turned on in Vista ?

        The more info provided the less guesswork on this end...

        They have a free trial. I think you will find that the backups are whats taking up your space. But until you run a reporting tool on folder sizes we won't know for sure.

          Please tell us whether you also cleared the System Restore Points and Shadow Copies when you did the Disk Cleanup and removed unneeded programs.

          I’ve noticed the same gradual loss of free space on my Vista machine and could often regain many gigabytes by clearing these automatically generated files.
          The option to clear these files seems to be available only if you chose to run Disk Cleanup for all users of the computer instead of for only your own files.

          Restore Points and Shadow Copies are valuable, so you may want to keep them, but they do build up in size.
