Is WIN98 installed?
« on: March 11, 2005, 07:32:12 AM »
I just got an old laptop that I don't know much about. When I turn it on, the WIN98 logo flashes on for a second, then the screen goes black, with the C:\>
prompt.
Is WIN98 installed?
If so, how do I get it started?
If I need to reinstall, can someone suggest a link on "how to".
Thanks.

If you got this system used then regardless of what OS is on it, you'll want to format and start fresh.  You never know what files the previous owner had or viruses etc.

Hi pauls,

u can type dir at C:\> to show u what are the files n folders  on ur c drive.

By default, win98 files are inside contained a folder named windows.

Cheers

pauls:

Sounds like the MSDOS.SYS file is configured to boot your PC to DOS.  Try this:

At the command prompt (that is the C:\> prompt) type:

WIN

then press Enter.

That should start Windows 98.

If you need help editing MSDOS.SYS to boot to Windows 98 instead of DOS, let me know.
