People can't open my MS Works files

I have Windows XP, I believe it has Microsoft Works 7.0......what ever file I send to people I get the reply back that they can not open it and to send in another format.  

How can I send it in this format and have them be able to open it with no problem?

What kind of files are these? Do you need your Works software to edit or create them?

Use Save As in Works and save them as .rtf files (Rich Text Format).
