    XP Won't Start After Rebuild
    « on: September 18, 2008, 05:51:02 AM »
    I just rebuilt my system (new cpu/mobo/ram/vid card). I am trying to reuse the old HDD with op system already installed. The system will POST ok and i can go into BIOS. But, windows XP won't start. Keeps rebooting. Won't start in safe mode or any of the choices. I guess i thought this should work. Have i missed something basic here? I really don't want to reformat.

      All computers running Windows XP Professional share the same startup sequence:

          * Power-on self test (POST) phase
          * Initial startup phase
          * Boot loader phase
          * Detect and configure hardware phase
          * Kernel loading phase
          * Logon phase

      Because of so many hardware changes the device enumeration has failed. Windows XP will only allow up to 10 device changes (if my memory serves me correct) before you have re-register.

      Does it ask you to register windows?

      It's also possible it's failing to load the motherboard, chipset, graphics, sound and network drivers, on account of them lo longer having the devices present in the new system.

      Repair Install of XP

      I suggest reading it thru paying special attention to the Warnings and then printing out a copy for reference...
      If done properly all your data and Programs will be intact.
      First thing to do when done is install your new MBoard drivers and re-boot.

      NOTE:The XP CD you use must match not only your version but the service packs installed as well.
