you cannot download windows live messenger by itself- you have to now download "Windows Live Essentials" which contains all of those.
I was trying to dereference Null Pointers before it was cool.

That's the Windows Live Essentials installer, not Windows Live Messenger.

It can be done. The Windows Live Messenger download is actually not easy to find through search engines because they have replaced it with the Windows Live Essentials installer.

Un-bundled installer:

http://www.filehippo.com/download_msn_messenger/

Essentials is supposed to install all of that and none are pre-checked which disqualifies it from the list.

Programs you can download include:

    * Messenger
    * Mail
    * Writer
    * Photo Gallery
    * Movie Maker
    * Family Safety
    * Toolbar

    UPDATE:
    I got the Windows Live Essentials installers.  That's why all the stuff was pre-check (it's the whole point).  Sorry for the misunderstanding.

    For messenger only:
    http://download.live.com/
    and find messenger link.  (it's verrrrry small ;D).
    So I guess you can get it alone.

    Thanks and sorry again for the misunderstanding

    Found Hotspot Shield today when looking for some new security stuff for my laptop. Besides the toolbar it's an interesting tool. They also have a version for the iPhone.

    I just did a clean install on one of my computers. I downloaded Avast and during setup I was prompted to install Google Chrome.

      Update the list to state that AVG 9 too tries to install those toolbars.
      Thanks Broni
