MONITOR WORKS, BUT SCREEN IS STILL BLANK
    « on: September 20, 2008, 05:17:51 PM »
    Hello folks,

I just joined the forum, and am not a very computer "genius" but here's my question:
I just got a computer from a friend of mine who said it worked the last time he used it "like 3 months ago", but stopped using it because he got a laptop. Anyway i got the computer, set everything up and turned it on, and the screen is completely blank.
I know the monitor works because i tried it on another computer, and i just put in a brand new Video card, hoping it would show signs of life, but to no avail. I know it has something to do with the actual computer but i am not sure what it is, because when i turn it on  i hear the computer purrring and all the lights go on etc.

Any help would be immensely appreciated!!!!!!

    thanks a lot,

    Oliver

Try the monitor from the 'good' computer with the 'bad' computer.

Post more info about the 'bad' computer: operating system, does it have onboard video, did it work before you added the video card (did you install drivers for the card?), etc.
If you don't have time to do it right
...when will you have time to do it over?

        thanks so much, for responding.

Yes, I have tried the monitor from the 'good' computer to the 'bad' computer, same results.

Due to not being able to actually see the information on the computer, becuase of the problem, all the info i have on it, is that the computer is a:  "Windows XP Home Edition OEM product".

Not quite sure what you mean by 'onboard video' but when i opened up the case of the computer i found a couple cards in there, not sure what they are but, assuming that they are probably a sound card and modem.

Nope it didn't work before i got the video card, and when i put the video card cd in it i can't actually install it because i dont see anything on the screen, but yes i did phisically put the card into the little slot inside the computer.

I'm not quite sure what the monitor is hooked up to. How many of these does the computer have:

my computer only comes with one, but by adding the video card (which has one too), that makes 2.

Connect to the one that isn't part of the video card that you installed.

we tried that first, before we even put the video card in. it didn't work thats why we got the video card, hoping it would help.

Is the video card seated properly ? ?
Sometimes you need a bit of force to get them all the way in...NOT too much.
Is the hold down screw back on the bracket ? ? This is your Ground for the vid card.
Is this a new card ?
If so borrow one you know works and swap it in there...the vid card may have shipped DOA.
