Cannot boot after install of Windows Vista SP1
    « on: September 24, 2008, 06:02:10 AM »
    Hi all,
i'm running vista home premium on my hp dv2000 machine, and recently windows update alerted me of KB936330.

aka. vista sp1. so i installed it, and now i can't boot.

everytime i  try, i get this black screen, apparently my files are being scanned, then it gets stuck with this stop message: 0Xc01a001d

i've googled this situation, and many people have suffered from it.

people recommend using system restore, but apparently i don't have any saved restore points. (this is from vista recovery disc - boot)

so since i can't boot into vista itself, how can i solve this problem?

any help would be greatly appreciated, seeing as all i've got now is ubuntu. :(

Try to uninstall Service Pack 1.
Use this manual: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial148.html to get to Command Prompt.
      When there, type in:
      start /w pkgmgr /up: VistaSP1-KB936330~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~6.0.0.<build number>
Replace <build number> with the appropriate build number you are uninstalling.

Hello, this is JXY (topic starter), it's just that my computer isn't with me right now. :(

So i tried the method you suggested Broni, however my progress has been impeded.

I do not know my build number D:

since i'm unable to boot into vista, i can't run winver to determine my build number.

Also, through Vista Recovery DVD's terminal command line, i'm unable to run Winver or even access Explorer. I can however access Task Manager.

My question now is how do I find my Build Number, or does anyone know what might it be? I've tried a few build numbers I found online (e.g. 6.0.6001.18000) and packet manager reported an error:
        The parameter is incorrect.

        Any help would be appreciated.

EDIT: Yes, my friend took over my laptop on the way back from school.

          start /w pkgmgr /up: VistaSP1-KB936330~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~6.0.6001

I just fixed an HP Vista desktop computer that had known problems with SP1. HP had no fix for it and suggested not installing SP1. I thought they were kidding, but there it was on their web site. (And no, there were NO XP drivers for it either.)

I hope this is not the case for this machine, but you may want to check.  ;)

*sigh*. That's probably the issue i've got :(. As you know, i'm running vista on an HP machine, laptop however. (not that it would make much difference).

            i tried the following command:

start /w pkgmgr /up: VistaSP1-KB936330~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~6.0.6001 (noting the spaces)

but pkgmgr reported and error: operation failed, the parameter is incorrect.

any further suggestions? i can't survive like this much longer...  :-[

It looks like the final build of SP1 is 18000, so the last segment should read:
            6.0.0.18000

Do check the HP website to see if that is a known issue with that machine.  ;)

tried that. startup repair did not detect a problem. which is strange, it should be able to detect the error occuring during the vista boot.

                  but it didn't.

and now i'm back to square one. :(

                  can anyone direct me further?

It seems like Google is seldom a friend when searching for botched SP1 installations, regardless of which stage it happens.  You'll see a lot of incidents, but seldom any solutions...

Given the time and headache, I'm wondering if it's better just to back up your data, format, then IMMEDIATELY install Vista SP1 afterward.

Granted that doesn't explain WHY it happened, but at least it gets you back up and running.

I wouldn't try a repair-install at this point.  Your files are on SP1, and repair-installing would cause even more problems trying to bring the OS back to RTM stage.

                    I agree, Jason.

I can help you with your backing-up process, but I strongly suggest you completely reinstall Vista (like I suggested many times before :P)

I have the same problem as you did. Computer lock- up with 0xc01a001d flickering on the screen after loading loading Windows Vista SP1 as recommended by Microsoft.  I did not see a  cure posted for it yet.  What did you have to do to get your computer running again?   -- Thanks- Litch
