Microsoft Media Player 10 - Vista
    « on: September 25, 2008, 10:10:02 AM »
I am using Microsoft Media Player (V 10?) on the Vista operating system. Yesterday I spent quite a few hours making a playlist. I was playing the list throughout the day. I later noticed that every song on the list that played resulted in a duplicate entry on the playlist? I manually went in and deleted all of the duplicates which was very time consuming. I have run exhaustive virus scans on the Media program files and the music library --- all came back negative for any viruses. Not sure if I am dealing with a software 'bug' or if I might have accidentally activated some kind of feature that ould cause played songs to duplicate on the playlist. Now I'm afraid to play this list as I do not want to have to manually remove the duplicates everyt time I use the list.

Any insights would be most appreciated.

Are they downloaded songs, and do they play properly?

A very "popular" virus is disguised as an MP3 file, and when you play it, it redirects you to hxxp://freemp3player.com (or something like that), and gets you to download a "player" for MP3 files...

      KPAC:

Some are songs off CD's, some are downloaded songs (LimeWire). In this case, as far as I can remember, the songs on the list I compiled and played all played properly. I've run numerous virus scans against the music library and the MS Media Player program files and they all came back clean. If this is an undetected virus can you suggest any way I can detect and delete it?

      Thanks,

Exactly where I found the virus I was talking about. :D

Virus scanners won't detect the songs as viruses, because they are not actually viruses... They just redirect the user to a site...

Go to the Computer Virus and Spyware board, read the second post, and post the three logs as requested. A malware specialist will help you from there.

      Good luck :)
