Is there a way to remove an email from the server?
    « on: September 27, 2008, 07:06:56 AM »
I have a friend who is having email trouble, everything seems to be working properly except the receiving of emails, they are still in the 90's on dial-up connection, and when I click the send and receive button it says "receiving message 1 of 125", but it just sits there and won't load the messages. What I think might be happening is the first message probably has a lot of pictures or something in it and it is too big for the connection rate. I adjusted the time out rate to the max of 5 minutes and it still won't load. Is there a way to clear the messages off the server without having to go through the pain of having bellsouth do this, which btw bellsouth is the server, outlook express is the reader and XP is the system.....any help would be appreciated

I'm afraid contacting them is the only solution...

I've never heard of Bellsouth, but this solution is possible with many service providers.

Using your browser, go directly to the Bellsouth website.  From the home page you should be able to access the Bellsouth post office directly, without using your mail client.  Inspect the messages and delete any which are excessively large.  If they contain pictures you'd rather not lose, open the pictures, then right-click and use the "save image as" option.

Once you've deleted any oversize messages, try again using OE to download the rest of the messages in the normal way.

I've never seen this option with any ISP...

Maybe it's not as common as I thought, but I've seen it with Australian/UK providers.

Yes, Virginmedia in the UK allow you to access your ISP-provided email inbox via a web browser. They call it "Webmail".

If it's a webmail account of course this would be true...
Not all ISP's use it though.

I don't know about other ISPs, but with Comcast, I can either pickup my mail through Thunderbird, or I can log in to Comcast web site, and read my mail there.

Not all ISP's use it though.

It isn't marketed as a webmail account; it's a smtp/pop3 type account but a few years ago they added the web access feature.

So we would pretty much need to go through them to get the problem fixed..

As stated several times, visit the ISP's website and look for a WebMail button or something similar.  Many ISP s now offer WebMail, thereby providing users a way to acccess their email via web browser.  And, this applies to POP accounts, which is what your friend is using to download your email to Outlook Express.

If you can't find a button or link on their site for WebMail, then contact to inquire about accessing email via web browser. Once the email is accessed via web browser, do as alan1000 said in a previous post.
