    ooChkDisk Problem
    « on: October 04, 2008, 07:26:24 AM »
    Hey guys,
I have been recommended this site by someone who had troubles once and I was wondering if you could make my troubles go away.
I got this new computer and it runs with Vista. It worked flawlessly for the past few days/weeks but then it didn't work as well... Everytime I start it up, i keep getting this ChkDisk sequence which always hangs at 65%. The longest i've left it is an hour or so and it still didn't load up. Please help if you can.
    Many Thanks,
    Steven ^^

Find out what brand hard drive is in that machine...
Travel to the manuf. site and DLoad their FREE diagnostics.
Follow their instructions on creating a bootable CD with the diagnostics.
Insert the CD hwn created and re-boot.
Run the long test and report back with the findings.

Use a different computer to download and create the CD...if you can.

Run the long test....this will tell you if that hard drive can be trusted or not.
I'd use the machine as little as possible til we figure out what is wrong.

I cant really use the machine because that ChkDisk thing always runs before I log in and it hangs so it wont complete itself.

Please do as Patio has told you.

You boot off the CD and it checks the drive for errors. Until we know if the drive is damaged or in good running order we can't tell you what to do next.

              Thanks!

Spoiler is correct...the bootdisk takes you directly to the diagnostics...it never sees Windows therefore chkdsk will not run.

It is.     Irrelevant in this instance however.
All it boots to is the diagnostics...it doesn't even see or get to the Windows startup.

Okay I burned SeaToolsDOS207EURO.iso onto my disk (Finally) Do I have to insert it into my PC and wait for it to do its magic or do I have to switch it on manually by logging onto an account, going onto the disc etc?

When you first turn you computer on you will see a message to press a certain key to enter setup. It is usually an F key or esc or del. Press that key as it is first starting up. Pay attention, as the message may flash very quickly.

This will take you into BIOS. Here, you want to look for Boot order, or Boot sequence, or maybe even just Boot.

You want to set you CD drive as the first boot device. You, usually, press the plus and minus keys to move you devices up and down.

Now insert the CD into the drive and exit setup SAVING changes.

                        Did you get into setup?
Did you change your boot order?
What program did you use to burn the diagnostic disk?

If you simply burned the .iso it won't be bootable...check the Seagate site again for FULL instructions on creating the bootable CD.

Go to this page:  http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/seatools/ and download SeaTools for DOS.

There's an instruction link on that page, as well.

Thanks, by the way, is it fine to us any CDs? Cuz I originally used one of those CD's called 'Tuff Disks' and it didnt work on my first attempt to burn the previous .iso.

You can use a CD/R or a CD/R/W disc...with a R/W disc, you will have to format it.

Also...when burning an ISO image to CD, make sure you make the CD bootable if the image isn't already.

Hi guys, I've been doing what you've told me for the ChkDisk thing but theres another problem. Now, whenever I startup, it always says:
                                            "BOOTMGR is Missing.
                                            Press Esc+Alt+Delete to reboot"
I'm not sure what to do... Any idea, guys? Thanks :)

Which repair do I use? System restore? Startup Repair? etc.
I tried using Startup Repair but it didnt work, the link told me to click "repair" but I couldn't find it anyone on the list and I don't think the person meant startup repair since he mentions using it if the first option didn't work (Startup repsir didn't work either, mind you)

Y'know if people say go to BIOS, is Advanced BIOS the same? And when I try reparing with the Vista disk, I don't get a list - it's blank so I have to search for drives myself but when I do, I cant find any... Any ideas?

I wouldn't know because just as I finished running the long test on the new .iso disc under saviors instructions, the Bootmgr thing came up and now I'm having a bit of trouble sorting it out.

When you performed the long test...did your hard drive pass diagnostics?  That's the main question...

If it did not, then you need to let us know where the diagnostics failed.  You'll either receive a "pass" or "fail" when performing the diagnostics.

As far as, your bootmgr.exe issue...your operating system (Vista) is letting you know that there is a problem with the boot sector...so Vista will not load until you fix the issue.  The last link I gave you was to information on how to fix this...and I quote:

                                                        Quote
Insert your Vista install disk and restart your system. Press any key when prompted to begin running the dvd. Wait for it to give you a list of choices. This may take a while as it often stays a blank screen for some time. Choose "repair", and the setup will auto detect your operating system. It will also fix your bootmgr.exe at this point. If it does not, you can go on to the next screen and choose "startup repair".

Granted...this is done after you configure your computer to boot from your optical drive, which is done in BIOS.  All you have to do is boot into BIOS and configure your optical drive to be the first boot device.

I set CDRom to first priority, is that correct so far?

But you still haven't told us whether or not your hard drive passed or failed diagnostics...

So, if you're trying to repair the bootmgr.exe issue, it may be moot if your hard rive is toast...

Remove the cd from its tray and click Restart...

Again...if the repair didn't work...follow the directions from the last link I sent you about using Startup Repair.

Remember...you should set the BIOS to start from the hard drive.  However, if it there's nothing in the cd tray, it should bypass it and boot directly from the hard drive.

Edit:  If it doesn't say Windows Vista, what does it say?
