sprtcmd.exe Not Responding when I try to turn computer off.
    « on: October 06, 2008, 08:04:57 PM »
I don't know if this is a Windows problem or a software problem.
I have had it for about 5 days now.

I have XP - Dell Computer 6 months old - 300 GB Hard Disk, 150 GB free. Have latest updates from Windows. I have 2 GB RAM.

I use PCcillin virus and firewall and CCleaner. I have ran full virus checks and run CCleaner every night before turning off the computer.

I installed MS Office 2007 this weekend. Was getting this message for about 3 days before installing Office 2007.

When I turn off the computer I get the message that "sprtcmd.exe is not responding."  I click on End Now.

Any advice?    Really, really appreciate all of the advice I've had in the past from you!!

Is your PC still under warranty?

Thanks for the reply! I appreciate!

I have phone support only for another month. I didn't pay for the extra types of support. I tried the Dell forums but didn't find anything. This evidently has something to do with Dell.

I use the CCleaner Registry Cleaner and also JV16 registry cleaner.

I haven't successfully found a Dell phone number to get the phone support yet.

Should I just delete that file?

      Thanks again for the help!

Disable it from startups, or uninstall Dell Support Center altogether. It has known issues, and it's a resource hog.

OK - I disabled it and now I can turn off the computer without problems.

        Many thanks!

All this makes sense and I followed the instructions.  I now have a feature in this Windows XP Media Edition.  I am a user in the Administrator group but when I use msconfig and after I uncheck the sprtcmd.exe in the Startup tab, I get the message that I must be an Administrator.  Well, I checked again and I am on this home machine.  Any suggestions?  By the way, Dell just posted today the solution which is to go to Microsoft and install:

SPRTCMD.EXE is a file used by Dell Support Center. The error occurs if Microsoft Windows XP does not have the Microsoft .NET Framework Version 2.0 installed. The .NET Framework 2.0 must be installed to prevent the error from reoccurring.

DON'T DELETE or DISABLE sprtcmd.com --- FIX THE PROBLEM!

The problem is your missing the Microsoft application Framework version 2.0 Visit the link below, download the application and install it on your computer. The reason "end program _____" shows up in the first place is that there is usually a program running in the background that can't shut down becasue of a missing application and therefore lets the user shut it down manually, I had the same problem and after installing the application the problem was fixed. Just to note, after installing it you must restart your computer for the application to take affect.

I'll disagree. If you read on the net, the problem IS Dell Support Center - tons of posts about it, and on a top of it, it's totally unneeded on anyone computer.

I agree. While installing the .Net Framework 2.0isn't a bad idea, the Dell Support Center is far from a critical component...

Even Dell on its web page admits (I'm to busy to find a link), there is a problem. They issued some fix, which works for SOME people.

I was having this problem too and found this forum yesterday.
I disabled the sprtcmd from start up, then uninstalled the Dell Service Center.
Last night I realized my laptop was running off the battery instead of the AC power. It will not recognize the AC at all. The battery was drained and the laptop shut down. I now have no ability to charge the battery or boot the computer.
Could this new problem be related to the uninstall?
