Compaq P locked up and I lost everything
    « on: October 07, 2008, 05:01:52 PM »
I have a Compaq Presario with Windows XP. The other day it locked up and it was manually shut down. When it came back, screen was in DOS mode. It asked if you wanted to open in safe mode, etc. When I finally got it open, I had to reload Office XP(child had paper due), all my pictures, documents, etc were gone. AOL is fine. All my icons I had on wallpaper screen were there but they want to be reloaded. For example, when I try to pull up my Canon things(camera) an error box reading "Invalid Class String" comes up... Real Player wants me to reload it...enough examples, I'm sure! Thank you for your help!

Before we troubleshoot this, you may want to start here:  http://www.computerhope.com/forum/index.php/topic,46313.0.html

Let's rule out a malware infection, first...

Follow the link above and then post a HiJackThis log, if it's at all possible...
