external hard drives

Can't transfer files from my external hard drive to my computer. A window appears with  "I:\ is not accessible. The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error."  Cable connections are done correctly. What must I do? Thanks. canidoit

Is this an external USB drive?

Have you tried  shutting down the computer...unplugging the external USB drive...turn the computer back on and then re-attaching the drive after the computer fully boots?
