A burning question
« on: October 15, 2008, 04:52:05 PM »
Forgive me for broaching this subject. If it's too off the wall or 'taboo' just delete it.
So then: My computer is pretty much a mystery to me. I hang out at 'The Computer Cafe' in my little town. I heard one of the local gurus say that if one was running a late model Microsoft product that it 'phoned back home' on occasion and reported all manner of things to it's master. And if a hacked version of a program was found running on this computer a signal was sent to a secret room at Microsoft. Whereupon all manner of countermeasures might be initiated against the miscreant. Everything from a visit from the 'Microsoft Police' to possibly the transmission of a weird frequency that might cause your monitor to explode and burn my house down. I'm not guilty. I told everyone I got all my information from The Computer Hope Forum and I wasn't going to be alarmed unless their experts said this was a possibility.
The local guru said, "Oh the Microsoft Police monitor all their traffic too; they are afraid to tell you strait."
Now I don't quite know what to think...

Ha ha ha, wow...believe me, most of what this "guru" said is completely untrue.  Some of it is impossible.  There is nothing that Microsoft or anyone else can do to blow up your monitor, unless they open it up and plant a bomb while you're not looking.  Some Microsoft products do sometimes phone home, but the situation described is horribly exaggerated.  First of all, they don't get any of your personal information or...well, all that much information at all.  However, if you were using an illegal copy of Windows, they would eventually find out and take steps to disable your OS, forcing you to buy a legal copy.

As long as a license for an OS doesn't expire the the software that came pre-installed should be legal. This is as long as it isn't trial software.
