Relocating the User folder
« on: October 25, 2008, 12:10:36 PM »
i wanted to move my user folder to another drive so i looked online rather than looking here (stupid idea)
i modified the registry key, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList to the new directory on the other drive

it created a new folder on a retart which contained nothing
it was still using the previous folder!
anyway it also deleted half the program entries for around 2/3 of my programs from my start menu and the startup list

i'm going to attempt a system resotre and then i will attempt to move the folder again
can somebody tell me how to do it properly?
btw, im using Vista home premium 32bit

thanks for any help and sorry for the long explanation

bcos the drive where my OS is is 80GB and my user folder is around 100GB by itself
anyway
i worked round the problem

i set that reg value to the new destination, made a new user, then copied the files into the new User file. then, a stroke of genius if there ever was one, i copied the Appdata hidden file to the new user which copied all my firefox extensions etc.
brilliant!
i am happy now

thanks for ur help guys, as always
