Some odd behavior started on Oct 26th - for example:
IE started by itself and going to ad sites (not our home page).
Pop up error messages - "The application or DLL c:\Windows\System32\msansspc.dll is not a valid Windows image. Please check this against your installation disk."  In the blue top border of the message box would be "KBD.EXE" or "Mantispm.exe" or "jusched.exe".
I googled the message text and found references to "getpack23" and searched for and found that on my system. Another website gave instructions for using msconfig to turn off getpack23 from startup. Meanwhile I also found "getmodule25" and stopped that from startup. I looked into add/remove software and found something called "icheck" that I uninstalled. I deleted the getpack23 and getmodule25 also. These 3 executables had creation dates of October 26th. (I deleted them when I found them over the past 2 days.)

Today, I ran into your website, read and followed your nice, clear stepwise instructions and have 3 logs for you here. Please let me know if I still need to do more. Thank you so much.

I don't see an anti-virus program running on your computer.  Are you using any anti-virus?  If so, it needs to be active.  If not, you need to get some.  I suggest AVG or Avast.

Also, you should update your Java.  To do so, go here and click on Free Java Download.  You will be given instructions on what to do next.  When done, you should remove any older versions.

And although you don't have to because it's technically not a virus, I would advise deleting C:\WINDOWS\ALCMTR.EXE in Safe Mode.  If you need instructions on how to do this, feel free to ask.

Aside from that, your computer looks pretty clean.  Are you still experiencing problems?

      Thanks for checking my logs.
I use ZoneAlarm suite which has a firewall, antivirus, and antispyware. We occasionally turn it off or turn down the level of protection to enable downloading something or for easier viewing of a website. We probably had our guard down when the module25 got on our pc.

I removed ALCMTR.EXE in safemode per your advice (there was also a prefetch file associated with it that I deleted). And I got Java updated and removed the old versions.

Our pc is working much better now. Your guidelines were very usefull. I learned a lot. Thank you so much for your help. You all are the best!

Awesome, I'm glad to hear it.  Internet suite programs like ZoneAlarm and Norton 360 are sometimes difficult to detect because they don't always specify which features are installed/enabled.  Be careful when lowering/disabling your protection...I strongly urge you to only do this when visiting a site that you know you can trust.

I had the exact same problem, this is so coincidental. I've been looking for a forum with a similar problem, I didn't know I would find one exactly like it. Anyhow, I deleted the icheck and the "getmodule23" and getpack23". I also went into safe mode and found the C:\WINDOWS\ALCMTR.EXE file and deleted it. But I still think that I'm still missing something and I can't find it. Could you please look at my hijackthis.log and see what I'm missing Plz. I would greatly appreciate it.

        cthis,
Please start a new topic and follow all of the instructions from this post:
        http://www.computerhope.com/forum/index.php/topic,46313.0.html

We need all three logs to start our procedure.  Also, you should know that requesting help through PM's will almost always take longer than making a public post and often won't yield any assistance at all.
