    keyboard preventing standby
    « on: October 29, 2008, 08:40:33 PM »
I'm running XP home on a Dell inspiron 8200 laptop. Because it is so slow, and because I need to access my computer multiple times per day, standby seems like a good idea. Any time I close the laptop, or if i leave the computer for an hour, it tries to go into standby, but then I get an error that says the PS/2 keyboard is preventing standby. I have looked into the issue a little bit, and read that it is not actually the keyboard, but another program (adobe reader was listed as a potential cause) was preventing standby. I believe just about all of my programs are up to date, but I'm not sure which one is causing the problem, if that is the case at all.

Go Start>Run (Start Search in Vista), type in:
    msconfig
Click OK (hit Enter in Vista).

    Click on Startup tab.
    Click Disable all

    Click Services tab.
Put checkmark in Hide all Microsoft services
    Click Disable all.

    Click OK.
    Restart computer in Normal Mode.

If it goes to standby OK, start adding startups, and services, until you find the culprit.
