    Is there a problem with my video card
    « on: November 04, 2008, 05:11:15 AM »
    Last week end, I downloaded the new game Call Of Duty World at war (multiplayer demo), I did play with it for a while and had no problem until sunday when my machine went slower and slower (a lot of lag in the game).
    At first I did think that the server I was on was lagging or my Internet connection was slowing down because of a lot of user on line (I am on cable). but when I tried another game on single mode with no connection to the outside it did the same thing.

    I am running a P4 3,0 MHz. on Windows XP home Sp3 with 2 gig of ram
    My video card is a Nvidia 8600 GT (512 Mg of memory on card)

    The only thing who is giving me some doubt is my Power supply witch is a 450 watt (brand new because the one I had gave away.

    Does anyone of you have an idea?

     I've tried to test my video card but anything qave a hint if it is good or not but it is fairly a new one.

    Thanks

     ???

    Welcome to ComputerHope.

    Any hardware changes recently?
    Did you do anything whilst you had the demo installed? (hardware changes, downloads, installs, ect...)

      Yes I did a couple of those (install and download) but I did not change any hardware.

      There is something that i can add to the info I gave is the the game work well for a couple of minutes and then it start to lag.

      Thanks

      Download and install Speed Fan.
      Install it and run it. Post the temperatures it reads.
      Play the game until it starts to lag, and then close the game.
      Immediately after closing it, run Speedfan and tell us what the temperatures are.

        Here are the readings :

        Before the game :

        System = 38 C
        CPU =      47 C
        Aux =       51 C
        HD0 =      44 C
        Core =    116 C
        Ambient =  0 C

        After the game and it was lagging

        System = 38 C
        CPU =      54 C
        Aux =       51 C
        Core =      125 C
        Ambient =    0 C

        Those are the readings

        I did tried a game that I played a lot for a couple of month (Battlefield 2142) and it had never lagged that way before and it did today. Could it be driver related I did upgrade the video card driver this week end ?

        Thanks a lot

        Not sure.
        Did the problem start around there?

        Also, your temperatures are very high, but they might be a bit unreliable.

        I suggest putting an external housefan or aircon next to the computer and see if it still lags.

          Ok thanks I'll try that and see if it is the problem.

          Thanks again

          Rool back to the original driver that shipped with the card...
          New drivers are not always better drivers.

            Thank to all,

            I find out that I had a defective video card (the cooling fan was not working at all). I am returning it to the company who will send me a new one.

            Thank again to all of you who try to help.
