Vista won't boot after chkdsk
« on: November 06, 2008, 05:22:18 PM »
I wanted to install linux, but when I went to resize the partition it said that there were errors on the drive and I should run chkdsk. I did so and it found some errors and finished. Now, Vista doesn't boot. It "freezes" right before the login screen, however I can still move the mouse and turn num lock on and off. I tried safe mode and the same thing happens. I don't have a Vista DVD but I do have the recovery disks that came with the computer. I've tried to start task manager but that didn't work. I'd prefer not to use them because I don't want to lose everything...

Depends on what flavor of Linux you are experimenting with...
Chances are it installed the GRUB bootloader for this so provide more details...

I didn't install linux yet, I was making the partitions for it but I couldn't because Gparted said that there were errors on the drive. I then ran chkdsk from windows and then this happened.

Also, I found this: http://forums.techarena.in/vista-help/747332-2.htm

It seems to me this is the problem I have because when I did the chkdsk it found 2 errors and then it made hundreds of thousands of changes to security descriptors.

So fixing this seems kinda hopeless to me... Here's the plan at the moment: I'm gonna find a CD drive, install it, boot up the Ubuntu live CD and burn whatever I need to save like music and docs to DVDs using the drive that's already in there. Then I'll use the recovery CD to restore the computer to factory state and then resize the partition and install Ubuntu alongside the fresh Vista install.
