    Firefox error or malware
    « on: November 16, 2008, 10:03:19 AM »
Within the last month I have noticed a problem that comes up with Firefox 3.0.4. When I am in a window and typing in a messages or or a new url, the screen will jump to a random page. It doesn't do this all the time but it is annoying. I first thought this was some kind of virus or malware infecting my PC( windows xp home). I use Bit defender as my AV and it is pretty effective. I have run several scans but nothing has turned up. I use "stumble" allot on my browser and it seems to mimic it. Could there be a connection ? Any help would be appreciated

    Thanks

Disable one extension at a time ( re-boot each time ) until you find the culprit...
If no joy-joy create a new Profile and see if the condition persists.

        Sounds long...
When is the last time you ran diskclean and defrag on that machine ? ?

Try and do it monthly...depending on usage of course...
If it's a very active machine and you test alot of programs, do lots of youTube etc. you may want to move that schedule up to every 2 weeks.
I do mine every Sunday night right before my weekly image backups...but i beat the snot out of my machines.

            Thanks.
It has been a problem for a long time on my pc (Firefox 30 seconds to open) More like a year at least. I think I have done a defrag in that time and maybe a checkdisk with no results. But its worth a try.
            appreciate the advice

If it doesn't speed up Firefox you can always DLoad and run MozBack (FREE ) and backup your profile ...then un-install FireFox and install the latest version which is 3.04.....

Close Firefox. Go Start>All Programs>Mozilla Firefox, click on Mozilla Firefox (safe mode). Same thing?

Thanks, not being familiar with Firefox in safe mode, I see that it gives you options to permanently disable extensions , themes etc.? Is that right? or can I just selective disable one at a time and see what happens?Without doing anything permanently?

              Thanks

Leave all checkboxes alone. This way, all extensions, themes, etc., will be disabled temporarily, just for this one FF session.

So if nothing happens then we know its one of the problems with themes and add ons or extensions?
How about the speed in which the firefox opens? It seem to open faster in safe mode.

Yes. Same goes for opening speed. The more add-ons you have, the longer time to open FF. In general, FF is not the fastest browser to open.
While in Normal Mode, switch to default FF theme, disable all add-ons, restart FF.
If it works OK, start enabling add-ons, but one-by-one, restarting FF each time, until you find the culprit.

I also re-read your first post:

The log looks clean, so we're back to my recommendation from my reply #16.

by disabling stumble upon, it seems the FF opens faster.
Does that mean I should uninstall it ? I do like what it does. Do you think by reinstalling it might work better?

I don't think, reinstalling an add-on will help. Some add-ons are just like that, eating up RAM, or slowing down FF.

Consider what StumbleUpon is doing while you are browsing...it is indexing hundreds of web pages with random associations according to each page you open...
Even on a high end machine this will take up some cycles.

Makes sense, but would it affect the opening of FF? I can see how it would affect browsing.

                        Thanks

It probably has to download it's index, or load it, or something along those lines.

                        Just a guess though.
