    cpu at 100%
    « on: November 18, 2008, 05:57:05 PM »
My pc has been running slow and when I open the task manager, it shows the 100% of the cpu is being used.  Malware and spyware checks and virus check come back negative.

    PC
    Windows xp
    3ghz
    1.5 meg ram

I restored sytem back to a date that I created as a good one, didn't help.

I have CA Internet Security suite and Glary Untilities,  MS Malware Removal tool

I suspect some kind of malware, but just guesing.

I think your best move might be to try and identify what would seem to be some process, hogging CPU time.  Wonder too - is HDD goin' crazy at same time and not resting?

Maybe from safe mode invoke (start/run) msconfig or look thru services.msc and see if you can spot something that is not expected.

Maybe you can isolate something - one try at a time and continue to full win mode to test.  I had to do this a while ago on my backup machine - forget right now what process was giving the problem.

May be a way to start anyways.

To do this, go to Task Manager and click on the Process Tab. Then sort the list by CPU Usage (CPU %)
Please tell us what's hogging all the CPU power.

hpqtra08.exe is installed alongside the drivers for Hewlett Packard Imaging devices and installs an easy-to-use traybar icon for quick access to diagnostics. This is a non-essential process. Disabling or enabling it is down to user preference.

It can safely be turned off...

After shutting the HP thing I went to the link you sent.  I found I already had the ccleaner, so I updated and ran it.  That is a great  program.  It cleaned about 125 megs of junk files.

My computer seems to be working just fine now. I will defrag when I take my afternoon nap.

Computerhope  has bailed me out more than once now.  Thank you.

          Good luck with exams
