Upgrading memory Card to Laptop

I bought a new additional 1Gb Ram for my laptop HP Compaq Nx9010 with pentium 4 2.86ghz having 256mb card. when i fix new ram to the additional slot, it is not detectecting. please help me to solve this matter.

Is it compatible?
What type of RAM?
What brand?
Where did you buy it?
